TAIHAPE

POSTMASTER FAEEWELLED On Wednesday the local Post Office staff assembled to say farewell to the postmaster (Mr L. Hill), who has been promoted to a similar position at Dannevirke. Mr McLaren, supervisor of the Post Office, expressed the staff’s regret at Mr L. Hill’s pending departure and wished him and Mrs and Miss Hill every success in their n&w sphere. On behalf of the staff Mr McLaren then presented Mr Hill with a case of pipes, Mrs Hill with «. cut glass cruet set, and Miss Hill with a hand bag. In an appropriate speech Mr Hill returned thanks for the gifts and expressions of esteem which accompanied them. He referred to the friendly feeling which had at all times existed bebetween himself and the staff and said he was sorry to leave Taihape. Recently Mr Hill was farewelled by the members of the Otaihapo Club who presented him with a silver cigarette case. In making the presentation Dr. H. M Hay referred to the many fine qualities of Mr Hill and the high regard in which he was held by members of the Otaihapo Club. Dr. Hay’s remarks were endorsed by Messrs P. E. Wakeman, C. Schauer and L. B. de Lautour. Mr and Mrs L .Hill and Miss Hill left for Dannevirke by the express yesterday morning. PRISONER AT LARGE The prisoner Charles Williams Wahle, alias McCrae, alias Wright, who escaped from the Raetihi gaol on Tuesday, October 23, has not yet been recaptured. The police are still scouring various parts of the King Country day and night. The latest particulars to hand are that a man believed to be the prisoner was observed walking along the railway line in the early hours of last Tuesday morning, proceeding towards Mangaweka. KING’S THEATRE “Pals First,” is the film which raised Delores Del Rio to stardom. It is the picturisation of a broadway stage play in which three men are pals in everything, first, last and always until Cupid steps in. In the cast are Lloyd Hughes and Delores Del Rio, also Alec Francis. The humorous scenes afford relief from the drama and the three hoboes get themselves into a terrib’e scrape until the final. The story is replete with comicalities, artistic sets, tearful drama and perfect photography. To-morrow (Saturday) night a triple star programme is to be presented: I ‘Bachelor Brides,” (Rod La Roque), “Sharp Shooters” (one of the best pictures of the year) and ‘‘The Collegians.”
