MISHAP TO ARAPAWA A break in the engineroom placed the Northern Company’s steamer Arapawa in a precarious position just as she was crossing the Manukau Bar on her voyage from Wanganui to Onehunga on Thursday morning. Anchors had to be kept down for six hours'. Eventually the Anchor Company's steamer Alexander was sent out, and, not without di culty, she managed to tow the Arapawa into port. The Arapawa berthed at 6.45 p.m. and will now be laid up for some time while repairs to her engines are carried out.

THE WEIGHT OF TJJE BURDEN Immediately after the retirement of Captain Sir James Charles, from his command of the Aquitania. death stepped in and exacted payment in full for many years spent under the burden of responsibility. Captain Charles was only 63 at the time of his retirement, which was followed immediately by his death. Of course, this sort of thing may simply be a coincidence, says Captain Felix Riesenberg in the Nautical Gazette. People ashore are constantly expiring, from many causes, and no special lesson can he drawn from a single instance. A few weeks ago another trans-Atlantic commander, Captain David W. Bone, of the Anchor liner Transylvania, was carried ashore from his ship and sent to the Harkness Pavilion at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Centre. Knowing Captain well, I was shocked when I saw him laid up by a breakdown undoubtedly caused by nerve exhaustion. For 48 hours, on the voyage that sent him low, he had never left the bridge. If every watch officer were compelled, as a matter of public policy, to be given one month off duty each year in his home port, and every shipmaster, commanding fast ships in' passenger service, were also given every seventh year (I can almost see the owners throwing up their hands in horror and gasping out orders to cancel all subscriptions, etc., etc.), ' aluabel ship commanders would live longer and the whole service of the sea would be in a much more stable position. Imagine a navy in which the officers never got any leave! Imagine any business that runs its most valuable machinery, without stopping, until it breaks down for a rest! INTERCOLONIAL. SERVICE.
