IS COCK-FIGHTING CRUEL?

The question whether or not cock lighting is cruel was discussed at some length by members of the general committee of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to-night. A letter was received ‘roni Mrs Stewart, of Nelson, forwarding a . ewspaper clipping telling of cock-fighting on ihe West, Coast, where '’ght-s are hold frequent ly. The first, member to suy a word in dofertre of cock-lighting was a woman, Mrs Biltcliff. Sh<. said: “There is no cruelty. A bird that, was brought to Christchurch .from the West Coast killed about. 20 in a. many minutes.” Mrs Dalton said it would have a steel spur on.
Airs Biltcliff said this made killing all the quicker. The chairman (Mr G. Di It cliff) said the steel spur was really a hnnian 0 implement. Mrs Biltcliff: From what 1 heard,
there was no cruelty. It was decided to call the attention of the police to the newspaper clipping. Airs Biltcliff dissenting.
