LABOUR CANDIDATES’ PLEDGES

Sir, —Re Welfare League’s letter; your corespondent quite misinterprets the real position. The manifesto recently issued by the Labour Party is merely a statement of what planks the Labour Party would pass into law during the next three years, if the Party got into power. There is not a member of the Party who has ever dreamed that the whole Labour platform could be put through in three years. The electors, including a host of Labour electors, have asked for a statement ag to what would be done during the first three years, if Labour got into office. This has been supplied to the electors of New Zealand anil is based on the Party’s platform. The other planks would come later on, as the public wanted them. Take the objective referred to by Welfare League. “The socialisation of the means of production, distribution and exchange.” Such an objective could not he carried out in a generation, and possibly a number of generations. Bur the fourteen points mentioned could be put on the statute books in three years, if the Labour Party was placed in office. If the Welfare League is still puzzled. I would ho only too pleased to enlighten it further. I am. etc., —W.G.
