CROQUET

WANGANUI CLUB A SPECTACULAR SATURDAY The Wanganui Croquet Club played its first club games on Saturday, when in brilliant sunshine and on excellent lawns, the order of the day was A’s and B’s versus A’s nnd B’s. Notwithstanding that this was the first day’s play of the season, most of the members played wonderfully good croquet, while some of the more experienced made surprisingly big breaks. This augurs well for the season 192829 and if one can judge from the good feeling evident on St. John’s Hill on Saturday it is safe to assume that, a record year may be predicted for the club. A notable feature of the afternoon’s play was the whole-hearted enthusiasm with which beginners and C players took up the game, and it is no exaggeration to say that under the assistance of senior players, a. great number of B and C players will gain promotion to the rank of A players. The following is the list of officers who will supervise the affairs of the club throughout the season and that these officers have shown their desire to introduce a sporting spirit is evident by the advanced stages of the arrangements for the various competitions lor the ensuing period. Mrs H. G. Skcet is the club’s champion player, having won this distinction in club competition last season. The following is a list of the officers: President Mrs G. A. Crawford; vicepresidents. Mesdamcs Blennerhassett, Rhodes, McDougal and Skcet; delegate to Now Zealand Council, Ven. Archdeacon Creed Meredith; hon. secretary, Airs Bassett Smith; hon. treasurer, Mrs W. JOHN'S FRIENDLY SPIRIT EVIDENT The friendly spirit which exists in croquet was exemplified by the play which took place on the St. John’s Hill lawns on Monday, when four members from Gonvill e Club played practice games with four members representing the Wanganui Club. The spirit of friendly rivalry was distinctly pronounced as the losers rushed in and most affectionately embraced the winners in hearty congratulations. Airs T Warnock, president of the Gonvillc Club, chaperoned the members of her club and was most appreciative of the hospitable manner in which St. Johns entertained the sister club. The folk -ig la'ii’s represented Gonvijle: Mesdames Boyd. Fisher, Alichie and Miss Aslin, while Alesdanies McFarlane, Newton, Simpson and Tilley represent--*! Wanganui Club. Airs Wcdderspoon has added to the many trophies to be played for at St. John’s this season a trophy to be given to the winner cf B handicap draws.
