THE RANFURLY SHIELD W A.IRARAPA EASILY DEFEAT HOROWHENUA [ Per Press Association ] CARTERTON, Sept. 15. The game between Wairarapa and Horowhenua for the Itanfurly Shield promised well for a start but, Wairarapa were much too strong. Dominating the play for three-quarter’s of the game, Wairarapa in the last quarter ceased to bother and Horowhenua scored two tries and a potted goal. In the first half Wairarapa made the pace hot. Within a minute Cundy, from an infringement had a shot at goal but missed. A loose scrum from a line-out saw J. Donald pick up and score in a handy position. Cundy failed to goal. Immediately afterwards a forward rush Wasley miskicked the ball when in the twenty-five. Parker fielded briskly and ran in at the corner, Cundy missing the goal. Horowhenua endeavoured to put in the ginger, but Wairarapa drove them back and from a line-out in the visitor’s twenty-five Jury snapped up and crossed at the corner. Cundy failed.— Wairarapa 9; Horowhenua 0. Jury received from Hart, burst through the forwards, and transferred to J. Donald who forced his way over to score near rhe poles. Cundy goalcd. Two minutes later from a line-out in the centre of the field Hart sent Cundy away. The latter, instead of passing to Cooke and his supports, brilliantly cut in to score in a good position. He missed the goal.—Wairarapa 17; Horowhenua 0. A throw-in saw J. Donald gain possession. Instead of passing he cut in nicely but was held up under the goal. Strange secured and punted up field for Roach to field nicely and land a splendid pot. —Wairarapa 21; Horowhenua 0. Half-time then sounded.

In the second half Wairarapa made the game very open and fast and had Horowhenu bewildered. Free kicks gave the visitors relief and from one Taylor had a shot at goal and failed. Tatana secured from a throw-in and scored at the corner. He failed with the kick.

Hart sent Cundy away and he passed to Cooke, who short-punted over Roberts’ head. Yates raced up, secured and passed to Stringfellow on the wing to score a very pretty try under the posts. Cundy goalcd. Pushing Wairarapa back Horowhenua looked dangerous but Mcgregor broke through with the ball, gaining a good distance and passing to Parker who sent on to Hart. Hart transferred back to Parker and the later ran in near the posts for Cundy to goal.— Wairarapa 31; Horowhenua 3.

Wairarapa after this lead with five minutes to go slackened. Immediately Horowhenua put on steam till Gleeson broke through rhe ruck with the ball at foot. He gathered in a handy bounce and potted a fine. goal. Continuing their effort the visitors pressed Wairarapa back to the corner peg where Galpin scooped up to score the final try just on rhe call of time. Akuira failed to goal and the game ended:— Wairarapa 31 Horowhenua 16 The attendance was between 3000 and 4000 and the weather conditions good. Mr J. S. King. Wanganui, held the whistle. The Auckland League football representatives to-day defeated Otago by 42 points to 22 in fine weather. Auckland were superior in the finer points of the game but Otago brought off some clever movements.
