A Disguise Too Perfect
The disguise of a London constable when on plainclothes duty is sometimes too effective. A policeman in the district of Eidmonton donned tattered garments and posed as a street hawker trundling along a costermonger’s barrow to complete his make-up. A dealer in old iron noticing the policeman’s somewhat disreputable appearance, took him to be a “down and out” and despite his protests, loaded his barrow with old iron and other junk. The policeman, unable to dispose of the gift, had for the sake of appearances to push the load around the streets for several hours until his period of duty terminated.
