LABOUR DAY MEETING AT WAVERLEY NOMINATIONS FOR ANNUAL RACE MEETING With the presence in Wanganui of a large number of visiting owners and trainers it is not inopportune to remind them of the fact that the Waverley Racing Club’s annual race meeting will be held next month, and is now only five weeks off. Perhaps no country racing club in the Dominion can lay claim to such a popular fixture as the Labour Day gathering of the Waverley Club stages on its admirably-situated course, and the fact that sportsmen are attracted from as far afield as Palmerston North on the one hand and New Plymouth on the other is ample evidence that this large district is whole-hearted in its support of the old-established club. Waverley is only about an hour’s run from Wanganui by car, while an excellent train service on race days permits of owners railing their horses to the course on the morning of the fixture and returning the same night. Equally as well served is the district to the north of Waverley, so it is fairly obvious that one reason for the popularity of the club is the accessibility of the course for owners and trainers, as well as for the general public. This year the programme submitted by the Waverley Club is a very attrac tive one, for none of the eight, races set down for decision is endowed with less than £lOO in stakes.

The principal event is the WaverleyWaitotara Cup, a handicap event run over a mile and a-quarter, the stake being £3OO. Then there is the open sprint, the Brewer Handicap, which has stake-money of £l9O attached to it. Run over six furlongs, this event always attracts a good class of sprinter. The Hurdle Race carries a stake of £l5O, as does the Moumahaki Hack Stakes, while three races, the Morton Memorial Maiden, the Flying Hack Handicap and the Jackson Hack Memorial Stakes, carry stake money of £125 each. The Wilson Hack HigliWeight is a seven-furlong race with £ll5 offered in stake-money, and that completes an attractive programme. Owners and trainers desirous of racing at this fixture should note that nominations will close at Waverley at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, at which time it may be expected that the secretary, Mr W. Macfarlane, will have received a record response. Handicaps will be declared on or about Tuesday, October 9, and acceptances will be due on Mondty, October 15.

By “KESTREL" 31.45 DEBUTANTE TWO-YEAR-OLD STAKES (Of 175 sovs.; four and a-quarter furlongs). For the Debutante Stakes, the first two-year-old race Tobaccoland . S of the season, there are fifteen “babies” engaged and Coon Song . 5 for these the public have little guide in the way of form, Rangitoa . . 5 save, perhaps, that provided by the 1 ‘parades” at Marton Modestrian .. 5 last week and on the opening day of the Wanganui fix- < lever .... 0 turc. There are some well-bred youngsters in che field, Coartlike .. 0 ( and if they do as well as their older relatives have done Pass Book .. 0 in the past there is a bright future in store for them. Francolin .. 1 Francolin, the Paper Money—Philomela fitly, showed Roman Lake . c plenty of pace in both those parades. Clever is another Speed Light . that has sprinted fast, while Coon Song, Praeda, DuelDuel Iona .. 8 ' Iona. Courtlike and Speed Light are hard to pass. The Rule Britannia decision mav be made for FRANCOLIN, CLEVER, COON SONG. 12.30 G0NVILLE HURDLE RACE (Of 200 sovs.; about one mile and five furlong. . The small field of nine is carded for the Gonville Cohesion 11 4 Hurdles, and with the exception of Whisogne they were Brigadier Bill 11 3 all seen out in the Okehu Hurdles on Thursday. Cohje- > exanous . . Polyphemus .. 6 sion was favourite in that event but was well back at the Kilburn .... A finish. He may do better to-day. Vexatious reads Olympic .... Beaumont - - Troilus .. well, but Olympic, who led for a mile and a-half on the. first dav. appeals better, while Beaumont may beat them Whisogne .. both. They mav be summed up thus: BEAUMONT, OLYMPIC, VEXATIOUS 1.15 SPRING HACK HANDICAP (Of 200 sovs.; six furlongs). Of the large field handicapped for the Spring Hack Desert Lad . 9 Handicap fourteen remain, thus helping in some degree to Te Atiawa . 8 8 make the task of selecting the best a little easier. Banket .. .. a 0 Desert Lad ran a good race in the Durie Hack and will Cashier . . .. be hard to head oif to-day. Te Atiawa mav again beat Dermod .. .. 10 the field as he did on Thursday, while Banket finished on Monsogne Rash Ca .. . . well and should be prominent again. Denier does not 0 appeal, but Cashier will be close up at the finish. DorOtauru Lass . mod was a winner at Marton but may be outclassed toUpoko 0 day, while of the remainder Skvpoint, Marica and Otauru Black Mai re . . Salt Petrel 0 Lass seem to have the best chances. The public may Skypoint 0 prefer them thus: BANKET, DESERT LAD, TE ATIAWA. 2.0 NEW ZEALAND ECLIPSE STAKES (A sweepstake of 10 sovs. each. 400 sovs. added; about 7 furlongs) It is a fine field that is set down to contest the Reremoana .. 3 Eclipse Stakes, for the nine that figure in the “correct" card consist of some of the best of the class now racing The Hawk .. 3 in the Dominion. Reremoana is making another appearance in this race, which he won two years ago. Last year he was unplaced behind Laughing Prince. Lvsander Mask .... 3 and Grand Knight, while when Gold Light and Nigger Kiosk .... Minstrel ran their famous dead-heat Reremoana was in third berth. He was finishing like a train on Thursday Laughing and a win again for him to-dav would be very popular Prince 0 indeed. The Hawk and King Lu may not be able to acStaghunter . Full Feather Lucky Light 12 12 count for Mask and Kiosk, the latter being especially brilliant, while last year's winner, Laughing Prince, will not be disgraced. .Staghunter is the only three-year-old to appeal. The totalisator mav indicate that the issue is held to lie between REREMOANA, LAUGHING PRINCE, KIOSK. 2.45 RAILWAY HACK HANDICAP (Of 200 sovs.; about seven furlongs). A dozen will contest the Railway Hack and here Singleton Discourse .. (. 11 again Thursday’s form may tend to throw some light on the issue. Singleton was the elect of backers in the Vigilance 10 Putiki Hack and finished fourth. He may be improved Avoneourt Hol us Bolus Lucy Rose . 9 13 11 by the outing. Discourse does not appeal and Vigilance will be better suited in the Moutoa Hack later this afterTeremoana . . 8 noon. Avoneourt? was not far behind the leaders in Swoopalong . c. the six-furlong hack race on Thursday and will do better Metellus .. . . to-day. Lower down on the list are three that appeal Baskier .. . . c —Lucv Rose, Teremoana and Sovena—but a trio that Green Acre (i should be prominent are AVONCOURT, SINGLETON, TEREMOANA. 3.30 HIGGIE HANDICAP (Of 350 sovs.; one and a-quarter miles). Nukumai A problem is presented for backers to solve in : i. ■ Paitonu . . . . 7 principal handicap event, for no fewer than eighteen will Black Mint .. 7 contest this race. At the top of the list is Nukumai, Valkon .. .. 7 2 who lost his rider at the start of the Marangai HanQueen Arch . 11 dicap, but it will be hard for the Manchineel gelding to Vivo ' 7 beat some of those lower down in the handicap, a remark that applies to Paitonu. After Thursday’s performance Valkon must be supported to-day. Queen Arch Royal Mint . Shining Armour 7 5 Mint Leaf .. 5 put in a nice finishing run in the Marangai Handicap, Pangolin 5 while X ivo was in the lead for a good while. Royal Mint Horomea Royal Game . . 4 3 and Shining Armour will count their friends, as will Mint Te Koroke .. Leaf, and perhaps Pangolin may show as much improveTalisker Gardant .. . . Singleton Capt. Gazeley 2 o meatman did Catkin. Horomea will not lack support and Te Koroke, Talisker and Gardant mav be best of the others. One comes back to VALKON, QUEEN ARCH. VTVO. 4.15 MOUTOA HACK HANDICAP (Of 200 sovs.; eight and a-half furlongs) The smallest field of the dav is that engaged in the Limosa . . .. 9 C Moutoa Hack, lor it is just outside the one-dividend class. Limosa heads the list with e>.0, but there is only a X igilance 8 8 matter of 15lb. difference between her and the bottom Kawhakina . 8 7 weight. She is a New Zealand Cup candidate and has won a couple of good hack races. Vigilance impressed Quarter Deck 8 4 when she won the Putiki Hack. Kawhakina and Quarter Mooregas 8 1 Deck do not appeal as much as does Mooregas, who finished third to Vigilance, while Flying Shot will again be close. Three that may be supported in order are Flying Shot 13 VIGILANCE, MOOBEGAS, FLYING SHOT. 5.0 OWEN HANDICAP (Of 300 sovs.; six furlongs). Partaga .. . . 8 8 Like the Higgie Handicap, t 1 e open sprint has atSilvermine 8 fi tracted eighteen acceptors and there is the possibility of Lysander .. 8 6 an upset like Thursday’s surprise win by Helotis. ParHelotis .. .. 8 0 taga’s finishing run in the Seafield Handicap makes him 7 13 appeal. Silvermine and Lysander can scarcely be supGoshawk .. ported against the more seasoned sprinters, while the Broad Acre . Bonogne .. . . 7 « 7 4 extra weight may find Helotis out. Tea Time should go well but Oration will be better. Limited missed the Keddar .. .. 3 jump-out on Thursday and with a good run will be hard Lady s Boy . Town Bird . Kilperon 7 C to-day. Broad Acre, Bonogne, and Keddar uay not bo as well supported but Lady’s Bov should do better, and 0 0 Starboard Town Bird, who won this race last year, should also Light 0 count friends.
