LADIES’ REST

THE SITE CONTROVERSY DEPUTATION TO CITY COUNCIL. A deputation representing various women’s organisations waited on the City Council at its meeting last evening, voicing strong objection to the proposed St. Hill Street site for the ladies’ rest, and favouring the site near the Alexander Museum. Mrs Duxfield, who headed the deputation. said that the women were asking why the Council l;a I changed its attitude, which had previously been stated in favour of the museum site. Another member of th.e. deputation pointed out that it was to the advantage of the city and the Council to make the rest room as attractive as possible. The Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers), in reply to the deputation, said that the Council had not definitely laid down a policy as to the site. He thought that they should endeavour to reach unanimity on the matter. The proposal to be decided at the poll was to spend £3500 on the work and it would be for the Council to reach a conclusion on the question of site. Whatever had been done by the Council had been done with the best of intentions. Cr. J. Siddells said he had been amazed to find that a motion had slipped through and the council had declared in favour of the Cook’s Gardens site. The Mayor interrupted Cr. Siddells, pointing out that there was no case of anything slipping through. That was an incorrect impression. Cr. Siddells: Perhaps it was my own neglect in not reading it In any case voters should be given an opportunity of declaring for a site pt the ballot. Cr. C. H. Burnett said he had always been opposed to the St. Hill Strfeet site and he thought that the matter should be determined before the ballot was taken. Discussion followed as to iho exact location of the sites proposed, it transpiring that the deputation had been under a wrong impression regarding the museum site. A council committee was set up to confer with the women’s Teprcsentatlves and inspect the sites under consideration.
