A GREAT NEWSPAPER

FAST NEWS SERVICE “LA NACION” OF BUENOS AIRES Not the least remarkable index of the progress of the Argentine Republic is the high position which it occupies in newspaper world, says the London Daily Telegraph. Few foreign newspapers are better known than La Nacion, the great Buenos Aires daily which, was founded in 1870 by General Bartolome Mitre, a former President, of the Republic, and, in 1877 acquired the first daily cable service publisher in Argentine. The development of La Nacion ha.-, run parallel to the development of the country. The newspaper acquired a powerful impulse under the editorship of Don Bartolome Mitre y Vedia, a son of the general, who was succeeded by his brother, Don Emilio. In 1909, upon the death of Don Emilio Mitre, the editorship was assumed by Dr. Luis Mitre, a son of Don Bartolome Mitre y Vedia, who was in turn succeeded by another one of the general's grandchildren, Don Jorge A. Mitre, the present editor. Upon tile outbreak of the Great | War La Nacion considered it is duty to range itself on the side f the Allies. It immediately increased its foreign cable service, and its war news strengthened the credit already acquired, and obtained an even greater circulation for the payer. On one occasion it published in full, transmitted by cable, the report of the British Admiral on the Battle of Jutland on the same day that it was printed in the London Daily Press. Few newspapers in the world have so complete a news service as La Nacion. News received by cable occupies, in fact, many columns daily. The desire for constant progress does not limit itself to news received by cable. Its special writers include the names of some of the world’s famous literateurs.
