On the opening day of the test match between England and West Indies, the former lost eight wickets for 362. E. Tyldesley made 122 and Chapman 50. Tyldesley was scratchy throughout, Hammond and Jardine giving the best display. The bowling of Constantine and Francis, combined with the excellent slip fielding, restrained the scoring.
