Hundreds were horror-stricken when May Cunliffu, the famous racing motorist, whose betrothal was recently announced, took a hairpin bend too finely while fighting for first place after covering 66 miles in a race at Southport sands in a Sunbeam car.

The car overturned and three times somersaulted. May and her father, who was a passenger, were extricated from beneath, her father being killed, with a severed throat artery. Miss Cunlifte has a broken arm and cuts on the face, and is progressing in a nursing home.

Another car overturned earlier and was wrecked, the occupants being slightly injured. Captain Malcolm Campbell was also a competitor, but retired through axle trouble.
