BALTIC STATES Lithuania Stubbornly Resents Settlement DISPUTE WITH POLAND ARMED BANDS THREATENING. i By Telegraph—Per Press Assn. —Copyright ] L Australian Press Assn.—United Service ] Received June 7, 11 p.m. GENEVA, June 7. The League Council for many hours wrestled with the dispute between Lithuania and Poland, Lithuania stubbornly resisting the unanimous desire for a settlement. Al. Blokland (Holland) reports that no progress has been made as a result of the negotiations owing to the Lithuanian attitude. Professor Valderinaras, defending the Lithuanian attitude, alleged that armed bands were still threatening Lithuania from Poland, also that Poland had refused the League’s assistance to arrive at a settlement.
AL Zaleski (Poland) denied both charges. Sir Austen Chamberlain, interviewed, expressed disappointment at the failure of negotiations. He declared that Lithuania’s recent claim to Vilna as its capital was contrary to the League Council’s desire, and urged Al. Valdcmaras to accept a peaceful settlement, otherwise he would lose the Council’s sympathy. Other wembers joined in the appeal to Al. Valdcmaras, who is the solitary opponent of the resolution in favour of a settclment by September The Council thereupon adjourned to enable private negotiations to proceed.
