ON THE BALL

TO-DAY’S TRIAL MATCH Preparations to Meet Taranaki in Annual Clash ACTIVITIES AT MARTON •’ By “Cross-Bar." The attention of the Wanganui Rugby public is fccussed at present on preparations for tine approaching annual match wiith Taranaki on June 4, and to-day’s trial match; at Marton, which will try out players in the running for representative honours, will hold interest for the who*© district. The trial will be played between two combined sub-union teams, one chosen from Taihape and Rangitikei Sub-Un [ ions and the other from the Metropolitan, Wainui-a-Rua and Wairoa areas. The combined. Wanganui team has been chosen by A r A. Takarangi and the Taihapc-Kangitikei side by the combined selectors in those districts (Messrs Glasgow, Rangitikei and Winiata, Murphy and Kelly, Taihape). The selection of the Wanganui team to play Taranaki will rest with the Union’s sole selector (Air J. Crowley) in whose hands will rest the arranging of spells in to-day’s trial. In order that all players chosen get a game to-day, whether reserves or otherwise, an endeavour will be made to arrange the trial in three spellsThe first between the teams as picked, the second with emergencies in and j those players whose form the selector I is decided upon, standing down, and i the third between a probable side against the rest. ; If circumstances were such that the ; probable team to meet Taranaki could ibe got together in the third . ell the players would be afforded an opportunity to develop combination, but it is likely that such an arrangement will not be permissible because it is certain that there will be defections from the teams chosen for the trial and it would be unfair to penalise those players who will be unable to appear before the selector to-day. The game at Marton will be very much in the nature of a snap trial, and largely because of that and the inability of some of the best players in the Union to attend, it is not intended to finally choose the representative sine to-day, but a number of players (approximately 20) will be sorted out by the selector to keep in training. Close study of the form in club games will be made later and the personnel of the Wanganui team will be announced <>n Al ay 26. THE TEAMS Metropolitan Combined. Borroman H. Among them are a few newcomers including:— H. UDY.—Played his first game for the Greytown club in the Wairarapa, later going to the Waikato where he played for the Pukekohe Sub-Union and Franklin. His game on Saturday last against Kaierau, marked his first, appearance in Wanganui and his strong running and resolute tackling caught the selector’s eye. ARMSTRONG.—HaiIs from the Wairoa Sub-Union where he plays for the Waitotara Club. He is a light type of forward, but has plenty of dash and is as fresh at the end of a game as at the beginning. There are many who would like to see him pairing with Coulston as a hooker, as it is in the front of the serum that he shows to best advantage. MONIGATTI.—Is a seasoned representative player, who has turned out for three unions, Waikato, Wanganui, and Nelson, and his presence in the Wanganui side this year should materially strengthen it both on defence and attack. Plays a good game as rover. BORROMAN. —Played for the Pioneers in Gore in 1919 to 1922 and represented the eastern districts.
