A COMMON FAULT

ENGINE PULL PROTECTING THE GEAR TEETH. A fault which is common to now drivers particularly is to lift the accelerator when using second or first gear. This practice should be avoided unless one intends to use the engine as a brake when descending steep hills, for if the engine pulls the ear part of the time and the car pushes the engine around another part of the time, wear occurs alternately on each side of the gear teeth, where it is intensified by the fact that there is always a certain amount of back lash between the teeth of the intermeshing gears. If one keeps the engine pulling as much as possible, when using the lower gears, the gear box will last much longer, and will not tend to become noisy so quickly.
