THE NEW FORD
THREE DAYS’ TRIAL. Recently two dealers drove a brand now Ford Tudor car from the assembly plant near Detroit over 3064 miles of road across to Seatcle on the Pacific coast. The total time taken was 76 hours 50 minutes, of which 8 hours 20 minutes was stops for pertol, oil changing and refreshments, etc. The travelling time was therefore 68} hours for 30G4 miles —an average speed of 44.86 miles per hour over roads for three days and nights. Even inclusive of all stops (petrol, meals, etc.) the average was 39.87 m.p.h. for over three days and three nights. This journey was made in the Northern midwinter—February 3rd to 6th —with mud, ice and snow. Even worse was the fog during each night’.-? travelling which reduied the speed to about 20 m.p.h. At one time hot coffee from Thermos flasks was used to melt the ice from the windscrcn. During one hour only 22 miles was covered; other individual hours saw over 60 miles covered. For the whole journey nor a sigle mechanical adjustment was made—not a spark plug was cleaned—the fan belt had no adjusting, the generator was not touched. The oil was changed twice.
