Outside half-a-dozen uniformed policemen were stationed and 20 special detectives from Scotland Yard* mingled with the exclusive crowd inside. The value of the precious stones was set down at £1,000,000, and the collection included some of the world’s most famous jewels. A pearl necklace was valued at £lOO,OOO, an emerald necklace at £45,000, and a diamond bracelet at £16,000. The world’s largest opal was worn as a buckle. The entire collection was carefully weighed, measured and photographed beforehand as a precaution. There was a thrill when a mannequin appeared wearing the £50,000 necklace sensationally stolen in France. It was a memorable occasion, and will be commemorated on canvas.
