DISSENSION
THE WAIKATO DIOCESE Parishioners Ask for Resignation of Bishop SUPPORT FOB CANON HARVIE. [ Per Association | HAMILTON, April 20. The recent dissensions in the Waikato Diocese, partly relating to the Anglo-Catholic movement and partly personal, appear to be reaching a climax. A meeting of 80 Claudelands (Hamilton) parishioners last night resolved ■without dissent:— “That this meeting views with deep concern the present unhappy condition of church affairs in the diocese, and is of opinion that Bishop Cherrington has lost the confidence and support of the great majority of the clergy and laity, end in the interests of the church should be asked to resign his office." It was also resolved:— “That this meeting of churchmen express appreciation of the course of action adopted by Canon Harvie in connection with Bishop Cherrington, and this meeting is gratified at Canon Harvie being reinstated to the various offices from which the Bishop attempted to remove him." Since the Bishop’s arrival late in 1926 there has been vigorous criticism in the press and at public meetings of his tendencies towards Catholicism. For unstated reasons Archdeacon Cowie nearly resigned. Canons Harvie and Strong resigned as examining chaplains and the Vicar of Frankton has resigned. Canon Harvie was suspended from his canonry, which suspension has since been cancelled. Also the Rev. Mr Rich was dismissed from his position as domestic chaplain to the Bishop.
