STOCK IN THE CITY

TWO SIDES TO QUESTION COUNTRY MAN CHAMPIONS TOWNSPEOPLE. City and country have differing —often opposing—interests, and for a representative of rural ratepayers to see through the not altogether rose-coloured glasses allegedly used by townspeople is somewhat surprising. But Mr T. Hine did this with some effect at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui County Council. Mr R. Farley, a member of the Waitotara County Council waited on the meeting for the purpose of securing the appointment of delegates to approach the Wanganui City Council on the matter of providing stock accommodation •n the city, within easy early morning distance of the bridges. Mr Farley’s Suggestion. “I suggest that accommodation be

sought near the Dublin Street Bridge,” said Mr Farley, “it seems the most suitable. As you know there is no provision for stock and .drovers within the city boundary overnight. There is a great feeling in the city now. that stock should not be allowed within the boundary, but it must be remembered that without the country, the city would be in poor shape.” Mr A. D. Mackintosh, chairman: Rave you any paddocks in view? Mr Farley: No. We have no grounds in view but the City Council no doubt has some suitable place. An Outcry From The Town. A member: Don’t you think there will be an outcry from people in the city? Mr Farley: Possibly, but the City Council could put its foot down with effect. If things go on as they are now, stock will not be allowed to go through the city. Mr Hine: But the thing is absurd*. An area right in the middle of the city can hardly be expected. Accommodation should be on the outskirts. I think country people themselves would object to have stock next door to their homes, especially if it took place two or three times a week. Mr Farley: I’m afraid Mr Hine is becoming a city-ite. (Laughter). Mr D. Mackintosh: I agree with Mr Hine. Stock should be on the outskirts. Messrs A. D. Mackintosh and D. McGregor were appointed to wait on the City Council with the Waitotara Council representatives.
