MLLE- POLAIRE IN DIRE STRAITS Allie, Polaire, the artist, who years ago was famous for her wasp-like waist and her pearls and is now appearing in a Paris music-hall, has had an unpleasant experience. She owns a villa at Saint Raphael, and the furniture in it has been seized and sold by order of the tax-collector. Allie. Polaire is in despair. A large sum was demanded of her in taxes. She could not pay it. and her furniture was seized last month, but she understood that she would be given time to pay. However, she learned that her furniture had been sold by public auc tion. Alany interesting souvenirs, statuettes, bronzes, portraits, and a bust by Cipriani were knocked down to the highest bidders, but the painting of her by La Gandara was saved, and placed in the Alairio temporarily. The artist asks if it is right to seize and sell people in effigy. Poor Mlle. Polaire is quite frank abotit her situation. She admits that she, has been compelled to sell her private house in Paris as well as her jewels-
