AMUSEMENTS AND MEETINGS

the majestic Madge Bellamy, Fox Filins star who comes to the Majestic Theatre to-day in “Very Confidential,” her new starring vehicle is said to give one of the most satisfactory portrayals of her career in this modern comedy-drama. Miss Bellamy, who received world acclaim as a result of her excellent work in “Sandy” and “Ankles Preferred,” again demonstrated her versatility in this picture. Sho is cast as an ambitious salesgirl in a modern sporting goods store. Here she meets, for the first time, Roger Allen, stalwart halfback, who is the idol of the girls. When she announces that she is going to win his love, the shopgirls give her a merry ragging and insist that she is goofy. This girl is determined, however, and succeeds in inducing the manager of the store to send her to a mountain resort. Here the half back is spending a vacation with his father. Al ad go poses as a celebrated sportswoman and lets herself in for some lively episodes. The supporting feature is also of the lighter type and features Maurice Costello with Mack Swain and a east of comedy players. This story is from the pen of the well-known writer Owen Davis and deals with the over popular amusing situations which arise in business between the Jews and the Irish in New York’s East Side. The supporting films include the latest Gazette and an Aesop Fable Cartoon. “Damaged Goods.” “Damaged Goods” the screen version of the famous novel, will commence a two days session at The Majestic Theatre next Thursday with a matinee each day at 2.15. It is claimed that this film adaption of the celebrated French author’s work is very delicately handled, and the acting is very fine, in some places superb. An addition to the play and novel which in this case improves the lesson of Bricux’s drama, is a series of the examples of the effects of the disease dealt with, which are introduced naturally into the incident of the story, and used with excellent discretion to enhance the point of the play without offending ordinary susceptibilities. The picture generally succeeds in conveying the lesson without sensationalism or catering to vulgarity, and it will probably carry a much note widespread message to the public than did the play in progagating the gospel of self-knowledge in the interest of society generally. By order 1 f the New Zealand film censor the picture may be shown to segregated audiences only. Accordingly women will be admitted to the Dress Circle ONLY, and Men to the Stalls.
