ATHLETIC CLUB REUNION ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT HELD ——■ i What Mr A. J. Weekes described at the true esprit de corps of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club featured the annual re-union and smoke concert of the organisation, held with marked success on {Saturday night in the Druids’ Hall. In opening the function, Mr Weekes, who presided in the absence of the club president, Mr W. L. Young, extended a welcome to those present. Athletics in Wanganui during the past season, he said, had readied a remarkable peak, and the season had been completely successful* The speaker mentioned the trip by club members to the jubilee of the Wellington Club and added that greater significance was given the present re-union because it followed wihat had also been the 50 years jubilee of the Wanganui Club. Amos, of Wellington, delegate representing the Wanganui-Taranaki Amateur Athletic Centre on the New Zealand Council, was introduced by Mr Louis Cohen, Centre president. Mr Amos, who is also chairman of the Now Zealand Olympic Council, briefly addressed those present and reviewed the position of the fund in progress tc send New Zealand sports representatives to the international contests at Amsterdam. Musical and vocal items were given and the toast list honoured included: “The King” proposed by Mr Weekes “The New Zealand Council” (Mr George A. Benson), “The West Coast Centre” (Mr J. Broad), “Winners of Trophies ” (Mr Weekes), “Cyril Maitland and Guy Broad” (Mr W. W. Bramwell), “Kindred Clubs” (Mr .1. Pawson), “Mr Amos, chairman of the Olympic Council” (Mr L. Cohen). “Ladies of the Club” (Mr H. E. B. Newton), “Mr Arthur Weekes” (Mr L. Cohen) and “The Press” (Mr S. J. Gudsell). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs AV. L. Young. Praser H. McLean, F. Ford and J. f. Aldridge. A welcome was extended to Messrs A. Telfar and C. F. Maitland, loading club members now residing in Wollinton, and regret was expressed by several speakers at the loss to athletics in this city by their absence, and at the impending departure of Mr Guy Broad, another prominent athlete. Bradley Shield (most points won luring the season), J. Broad; W. W. i Bramwell Cup (three mile championship), J. A. Pawson; and Gifford Alar- ! -hall Cup (sprint events at jubilee), : M. B. Ross, xylophone solo; A. Vincent, violin solo; T. Souter, recitations; L. tidy and Nelson Aleuli, songs with ukulele accompaniment; G. Broad and J. A. Pawson, sketch on leading men in athletic affairs.
