MAMMITIS

SCOURGE OF THE DAIRYMAN At n number of farmers’ gatherings during tne last few months, the question of manimitis has been discussed and tne opinion has been expressed that the Government should make thorough tests of various vaccines which are on the market, and say definitely which arc good for the purpose claimed of them.

Mammitis is undoubtedly the greatest scourge of the dairy farmer in New Zealand to-day, and anything which will tend to decrease it should have the unqualified support of the Government, oven if it is produced by private enterprise.

A vaccine which is produced in Hamilton and is extensively used throughout the Waikato has been on the market for u number of years. Some farmers claim wonderful success with this.

both as a prophylactic and as a cure in mild cases.

The attitude taken up, and rightly so, by several fanning bodies, is that the Government should make a most thorough investigation of these cases, and of the action of the vaccine generally, and then give a definite opinion as to its merits. The industry is entitled to have a lead, and it is remarkable that while the Commonwealth Government itself produces a mammitis vaccine of a similar type, the Now Zealand Government has been content to sit back and do nothing at all.
