£300,000 FRAUD
AIDED BY WOMAN MONEY LOST BY 1000 DUPES. . Mure than 1000 people face ruin through one of the most gigantic swindles ever perpetrated in Berlin 'writes a correspondent in the Daily Mail;. Herr Paul Bergmann, who came to Berlin from Eastern Europe, after various financial adventures, set up fine offices in the heart of the city. He borrowed money at high interest from anybody who would lend it to him, -.nd sometimes offered interest as high as 48 per cent. Thanks to a charming woman of the Prussian aristocracy, who was well paid for her services, Bergmann made the acquaintance of numbers of people of great family, who lent him money which enabled him to live at the rate of £12,000 a year. He established confidence t>y repaying some of them with commendable promptness.
Bergmann has vanished, and the total lost by those who were foolish enough to trust him is said to amount to £300,000.
