VISCOUNT CAVE DEAD
A NOTABLE CAREER PASSING OF LORD CHANCELLOR. (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, March 30. The death occurred to-day of Viscount Cave, Viscount Cave was created first Viscount in 1918. He was born in London in 1856 and was educated at the Merchant Taylors’ school and at St. John’s College, Oxford. In 1885 he married Estella Penfold, daughter of the Late William Mathews, of Somerset. He was admitted as a barrister of the Inner Temple in 1880 and in 1904 was made K.C., and Afaster of the Bench in 1913. He was standing counsel to Oxford University from 1913 to 1915 and Attorney-General to the Prince of Wales in 1914 and 1915. Viscount Cave held the rank of Honorary Licut.Colonel and Commandant of the 2nd V.B. East Surrey Regiment. He was a member of many important •boards and committees, including the Alunitions Enquiry Tribunal in 1921, the Southern Rhodesia Commission in 1919-.1920, and the Committee on Trade Boards in 1921-1922. He w r as M.P. for Kingston division of Surrey from 1906 to 1918, Solicitor-General 1915-1916, and was Home Secretary in 1915 and 1916, before becoming Lord Chancellor. He leaves no heir.
