LONELY EXILE
TRISTAN DA CUNHA LIFE ON SOUTH ATLANTIC ISLE (A. & N.Z.) SYDNEY, Alarch 27. The loneliness of the community of Tristan dsi Cunha is emphasised in a letter published by the Sydney Alorning Herald from a resident of the group, delivered 11 months after dispatch. The letter was inscribed: “5.0.5.” and addressed to any leading newspapers, and marked, “No stamps here.” The writer asks: “Please be good enough to help us in our lonely exile here. Will you ask shippers to let theii vessels call on their way to America. ”
It goes on to say that potatoes failid in the winter of 1926 and the inhabitants were faced with semi-starva-tion, and asks: “Is it right to ignore the islaiud, for 12 to 18 months and even longer ” It adds that some letters posted in 1923 arrived only in March 1927.
