NOTES AND COMMENTS Handicaps for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Eastci meeting are due on Tuesday next. Comical has been schooled over big country in Hawke’s Bay of late to the satisfaction of his connections and should be ready early.

The valuable handicap performer, Degage, who has been in retirement for some time past, has resumed worn at Trentham.

The sturdy pacer, Talaro, who haa been spelling since the New Zealand Trotting Cup fixture, is to race at Easter time.

Followers of the batten-racing game in Hawke’s Bay are looking forward to Mr C. F. Vallance producing Red Fuchsia and Peneus as crack hurdlers this season and next.

Trivalve has already broken all New Zealand and Australian records by winning £25,630 as a three-year-old, or £27,650 in all-

When Star Stranger established a New Zealand and Australian two-milo record in the Trentham Gold Cup he took half a second off the time held jointly by Kcnnaquhair, Windbag and Spearfelt.

The Hawk showed symptoms of soreness after contesting at the Wellington meeting last week, but. as a rule, he soon comes round, and the veteran may be found contesting again next month.

Satrap's form at the recent meeting held at Trentham is stated to have led to overtures being made to his owner to put a price on the Paladin gelding. It is stated that Mr J. S. Barrett replied that Satrap was not for sale.

Uralla has won over hurdles, but evidently it is intended to put her to steeplechasing, for she is entered for the Mangere Steeples to be run on the first day of the A.R.C. autumn meeting.

Importer has been taken up again by . Ryan. This gelding, who has previously shown promise as a hurdler, has proved rather difficult to train in the past, but the spell may have remedied this defect-

C. Lee has worked a big improvement in Carberly of late, and the maiden trotter is going solidly in his work- In the slow classes ruling at the country meetings he should have an outside chance of picking up a stake. He will probably come in to Wanganui next week. Archibald ran a good race in th< Second Hurdle Race at Paeroa on Mon day, and he should be an improved horse if started in the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie at Easter time. Archibald won this event two years ago and was beaten by Royal Form last year-

Frisco Jack, who won the steeplechase each day at the Waikato spring meeting last October, is among those entered for the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie next month. This horse is a great jumper, and he will only need to be at his best to give a good display.

fhat good mare Set Sail is entered for the Auckland autumn meeting- She has also engagements at Riccarton at the same time, and seeing she is trained at Wingatui it looks more likely that she will compete at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting.

That good sprinter Benzora had no difficulty in w inning the St. Patrick's Handicap at Opunake, and is likely to show up again in sprint events before the season is much older. Benzora won the Shorts Handicap at the Wellington spring meeting, which marked his only other success this season.

Though Bright Glow is entered for the Easter Handicap and the Autumn Handicap at the Auckland meeting it appears to be a bit doubtful whether she will come north. She may be raced at Feilding at Easter time, but on Ltr showing at Trentham in the Thompson and Suburban Handicap she would have a great chance if started at Ellerslie.

The weight allotted to Rapier. 9st--91b., in the Great Autumn Handicap is four pounds less than Sasanoff carried to victory j n the competition for the event in 1920, while others who had in excess of nine stone when thev proved triumphant were: Warstep, 9st 111 b; Merganser. 9st 81bs; Los Angeles 9st. 51b; Grand Knight, 9st 41b; Red Wink, 9st 21b; Boniform. North Atlantic and Merrie England, 9st 11b.

Bonhomme, who used to be trained by F. Tilley at Fordell and is now one of A. D. Webster’s team, made his first appearance as a hurdler at the Rangitikei meeting and finished second to Modern. This was a most encouraging ■tart, and Bonhomme is evidently going to be more than useful over “tho •ticks.’-’

What can be accomplished with :• useful horse cleverly placed is instanced by the success of Maeroom. who has performed with marked consistency at the recent country fixtures. Most of her victories have been achieved where the stakes have not been large, but she has earned £1325, as well as a gold cup valued at £4O and a gold watch valued **- W'y the latter trophy going to her tnunef, M- J. Carroll.

It was stated some little time back that there was a prospect of White Fang being again transported to Sydney with a view to his being raced -it the autumn meetings in New South Wales. Advices now to hand from Napier state that the contemplated trip for the Polydamon gelding is declared off.

The well-performed hack. Star Comet, is due to make his next appearance atthe Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting next month. Star Comet hag a record of two wins and two seconds in his last four starts, and it will bo interesting to note how he will race at Ellerslie, where he has previously failed in the past.

There are some strong stable combinations in the Auckland Easter Han dicap, among them being Jamieson’s quartette, The Immigrant, In the Shade, Le Choucas and Ti Tree; Davis' Doree, Great Charter and Gascony; Rayner’s Mask, Thaw and Lysander; Jefferd’s Joy King and Star Stranger; Tilley’s Laughing Prince and Limited; A. Cox’s Nancy Lee and Valkon; and Paul’s Aussie and Awarere. Even allowing for these dual entries, it looks like being a big and strong field on the day.

Star God, the three-year-old full brother to Star Stranger, who cost punters over a thousand pounds at Napier (remarks the Hawke’s Bay Tribune), is worth following a little longer, as any day now he might run up to a private gallop when he defeated comfortably, by a couple of lengths over a mile course, his well-performed lull-brother. Some four seasons back. Trainer Jefferd had in Penitent, fulibrother to Rapine, a first-class galloper in private who failed miserably with the colours up, so will be unfortunate if Star God is another of the same kidney. Great sire as Martian undoubtedly was, not a few of his stock could be quoted who were not honest.

Set Sail was second in the Great Easter Handicap and third in the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton last season. She is engaged in both these events next month, and should give a good account of herself, though on her recent running one would prefer her foi the longer journey, the Great Autumn Handicap, one mile and a-half. At the recent Wellington meeting she finished fourth in the Thompson Handicap, and in the Autumn Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, s h e was in front a furlong from home and finished close up, fifth. At the previous Trentham fixture she was a good third in the Cup, and won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, on the second, day. An Unlucky Incident-

Perhaps the most unlucky runner at Trentham on Saturday last was Bright Day, who was solidly backed for the Second High-Weight Handicap. At the rise of the barrier his rider, A- E. Ellis, lost a stirrup-leather, and had to manage as best he could for the remainder of the race. As Bright Day beat all but Nucleus, it will be seen that the Day Comet gelding did really well under such a big disadvantage. His second in the circumstances also recredit on the horsemanship of Ellis, who had anything but a eomxortable ride. Backers of Bright Day were very unlucky.
