ROWING

EIGHTS IN ACTION CANTERBURY WIN BIG RACE. WANGANUI IN FOURTH BERTH. [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, March 24. The interprovincial eights rowing race was rowed on the Koro Koro course on the Wellington Harbour, parallel to the Hutt Road, this afternoon, and large crowds watched from the shore. A fairly stiff northerly blew all day, but dropped a good deal during the aftcroon. The course being sheltered from the north, the water was fairly smooth. The boats started in the following positions: —Canterbury (inside), Wanganui (2), Auckland (3), Marlborough (4), and Otago (outside), and went northwards for a distance of three miles. Results:—• Canterbury—E. H. Brown (str.), G. Duggan (7), S. P. Godfrey (6) C. S. Morris (5), C. A. Styles (4), H. G. Styles (3), W. L. Whittington (2), F. G. Osborn (bow), A. Eastwood (cox) 1 Otago 2 Marlborough 3 The time was 14 min. 17scc. All the crews started with the exception of Wellington, who started off the day with bad luck. Just as they were bringing their boat to the Petone beach they struck a wooden pile and the bottom of the boat was split. The boats took an exceptionally long time to get into position. AH the crews got away with the gun, and it was not long before Canterbury began to draw out from the line. For the first quarter of a mile there was a little to pick

and choose between any of the crews, but towards the half-mile mark Canterbury pulled a little further ahead and Otago crept away from the others, until they were about one and a-half lengths behind Canterbury.

Marlborough was last at this point. Otago then drew up on Canterbury and

crossed over from the outside. Marlborough here beat Wanganui for third place. Half a mile from home, Otago drew up to within half a length of Canterbury, but a good spurt by the

Canterbury men increased their lead a trifle, ahd the finishing point was passed by the Canterbury men threequarters of a length ahead of Otago. Third place was taken by Marlborough, a much greater distance back, while Wanganui came in fourth and Auckland last.

Canterbury, well spared, rowed a beautiful stroke throughout, the race and scarcely varied from start to finish. Otago did well, but towards the finish lacked good combination.
