“A POSITIVE SCANDAL” METHOD OF CHURCH GIVING The Scotsman recently had the fol- i lowing:— f “Declaring that England was hypocritical about gambling the Rev. F. 11. Gillingham, in the address at Birmingham Parish. Church, said the modern way of collecting for hospitals was ‘all wrong.’ One would have thought the cause of humanity was sufficiently strong for any man to give what he could as a thank offering for health enjoyed, without the inducement of golden ballots, motor-cars, household furniture, and free honeymoons. The growth of betting was a positive scandal, and unless checked, England would be morally the loser.”
