THE ADVENTURES OF PETER AND PAM, THE TERRIBLE TWINS

Peter found an old motor tyre one day—and then he had a “brain-wave.” “This.” he said, ••will make a splendid raft; if we float it on the pond and sit on it. we can fi<h for hours without being disturbed.” “Great idea!” cried Pam. “Maybe we'll catch some whales!” So the bait-tin was brought out, and the Twins and the Family prepared for their adventure.

The old tyre duly pushed into the pond with the Twins and their fishing rods and lines established upon it, the Family qquickly followed with their own tackle and bait. “Now we’re going to have a very nice afternoon,” smiled Peter when everyone was comfortably settled (except Micky the Mouse, who couldn’t get on with the bait!) ’ ‘lt will be lovvely,” sighed Pam, “Let’s get a move on, Peter!”

Bit they fished, and they fished, and they fished! And nothing happened. >The little fish popped up their heads and looked at the fisherfolk, but they Ain’t hang themselves on the hooks. And Pam began to feel hungry; so did PJ*er; as for poor Spot, ha looked exactly like Dismal Desmond, so sadly did he yearn for a bone. Then Smut espied something strange on the bank. “Gracious!” she hissed, “An-an-elephant!”

Gradually the raft floated towards old Jumbo who stood on the bank smiling at the fisherfolk. “Thank goodness! I see help at last!” groaned Pam. “If Jumbo won’t help us off this horrid raft I shall cry, Peter!” Then she hailed the elephant. “Please, Mr Elephant, Do help us off!” “We’re so weary of fishing,” finished Peter. “Well,” trumpeted Jumbo, “you certainly are in a pretty fix. Wait a bit.”

Jumbo’s method of saving the little fisherfolk was a queer one. Instead of drawing the raft to shcre with his long trunk, he proceeded to draw the water out of the pond and squirt it over his shoulder into a garden nearby. “That’s fine!” cried Pam, putting one foot gingerly over the side of the raft, “it’s not so deep now; I can touch bottom!” “Good old Jumbo!” yelled Peter “So can I!” Spot, with Micky on his back, was already on the bank, and Smut sat beside the Twins awaiting rescue, while Jumbo went on emptying the pond!

And ar last Jumbo succeeded- He succeeded so well that poor little fish were left almost high and dry, and quite gasping from lack of water. Smut walked proudly up r. bridge made of Jumbo’s trunk grasped by Peter and Pam; then the Twins followed, and were warmly greeted by Spot and Micky, who wore already quqite at home with. the good oid elephant. As the little fish swam away in the shallow water to look for a more comfortable home, the last of tne fisherfolk w~s dragged ? shore, and everyone lived happily ever after!
