PRACTICE OF TROLLING ANGLERS EXPRESS CONCERN. The reputation of the famous troutlishing to be had where the Waitahauui River runs iuto Lake Taupo is jlikely tu suffer in the practice of Lolling in the bay from launches con--1 nucs. This is the opinion of several k.-cu anglers who have returned from a holiday at Taupo. They say the use of launches and boats in the bay is on the increase, and if -oniinucd is likely to prove a nuisance from the landfisherman's point of view. “The bay is essentially the landfisherman’s hunting-ground,” said one of the anglers. The fish lie feeding where the river stream reaches the deeper water of the Jake, and the fishing to be obtained from the water nearer inshore where it is possible to wade has won a great reputation. Trolling from a launch is allowed by law, I believe, at a distance of not less than 300yds. from inshore, so there has always been the possibility of the fish being disturbed by the engines of launches coming close inshore. “For the two weeks I was there, there was at least one launch trolling across the bay every day—whether it kept outside the 300yds. limit I could uot say. Its presence, at any rate, was enough to affect the fishing. In addition a number of other boats anchored close in for fly-fishing, and their presence did not tend to improve the sport of those fishing from the shore. “(Considering the extent of the fishing available for the owners of boats Land launches, I think it would be only flair if they refrained from spoiling ‘the sport in* this particular spot, which 'attracts sportsmen from places beyond iNew Zealand.”
