The necessity of erecting buildings of sufficient strength to resist the stress of earthquakes, of protecting water supplies and of arranging lor the cutring off of gas and electricity in the event of a severe shock was emphasised in au address given to the Rotary Club by Mr. C. R. Ford, of Auckland. Mr Fond drew attention, to the parapet walls on the top of so many buiL'.ings in New Zealand and said they would be the source of great danger in the event of a severe shock, as they would fall into the street and kill people. It was no use having a good framework unless all materials were securely fastened together and the many projections from the existing buildings would be a source of very leal danger in the event of a severe ■hoek.
