CABLES AND WIRELESS

BRITISH SERVICES Companies’ Offer to Take Control Discussed AMERICAN COMPETITION. (By Telegraph—Per Pre?? Assn.—Copyright.) Received Alarch 23, 11 p.m. (The Times). LONDON, March 23. The Times, in a leader on the cablewireless companies’ offer to take over the Government Atlantic and Pacific cables, says it is a business-like proposal and has apparently attracted the Dominion Governments which arc not unwilling to be relieved of unprofitable cables, but the British Post Office is reported to be unwilling to part with its profitable beam station. American wireless and cable competion tends to increase, and British enterprise must be prepared to compete efficiently, although it is not necessary co regard it primarily as a matter of cut-throat hostility. If British control is absolute in British spheres, there would be no disadvantages from friendly co-operation elsewhere. The Times says the Imperial Conference will be guided by public interest in deciding whether the Pritish Post Office retains the beam Stations, but competition undoubtedly requires the most efficient form of unified administration.

It is understood that Cabinet has decided on the terms of the statement which Air Baldwin will inake regarding cable and wireless services.

The Daily News believes that the sttaement docs not remove entirely ths suggestion that the Government intends to dispose of its shares in wireless and cables, but the question may be referred to the conference.
