THE TURF

RANGITIKEI FIXTURE

HIPO’S FRASER MEMORIAL BOBBIN SURPRISES IN SPRINT. £UANUI COMPLETES DOUBLE. (By “Kestrel”). Perfect weather conditions prevailed yesterday for the concluding day of the Rangitikei Racing Club’s annual race meeting at Bulls, and it was not surprising to lind that the attendance was fully up to the first day’s crowd. The track was again in good order and this was retie. :» I in the times recorded. The handicapping for the day’s programme was done by Mr W. P. Russell. and that he succeeded admirably in concealing the winners was evidenced by the tact that only one favourite won. though six of the public’s choice filled minor places. The principal event, the Eraser Memorial Handicap, was won by the New Plymouth owned and trained Hipo in an easy manner, thus continuing the run of Taranaki successes • from the tirst day. while both Aropeta and Eka are trained in the butter fat province. The open sprint was won rather un- • x leymoon Handicap was annexed by Ruanui, the only horse to score a double success at the meeting. Wanganui was represented by a winner in the hurdle race. Elysianor running consistently to score in taking fashion. The management of the meeting was of the usual high class, and the hospitality of the club such as to make the fixture an enjoyable one for visitors. In spite of the fact that the fields were not of large dimensions the totalisator returns kept up remarkably well, the sum of £ll,BOO handled during the day being only £75 less than the sum put through on the concluding day twelve months ago. The turnover for the meeting was £25,649, an increase of £2lO over the £25.439 handled at the 1927 fixture. A description of the racing, together with full details of the •'•elds, follows. Elysianor Makes Amends. Lysander (£281) was the elect of backers in the opening event, the Sanson Hack Hurdles, but Bonhomme (£256) and Mountain Bell (£231) were also well supported. Vanninia was first to show’ out and led over the initial obstacle from Bonhomme, Elysianor and Son o’ Aline, but at the second fence Bonhomme was the pilot. Here Mountain Bell stumbled on landing and threw her rider. Passing the stands Bonhomme *as out in front of Vanninia, Elysianor and Bon o’ Aline, and he had a lead of four lengths into

the back stretch from Son o’ Aline, Vanninia, Elysianor and Olympic, with Polyphemus still last. Both the favourite and Polyphemus made forward moves crossing the top and Elysianor ran to the front at the penultimate obstacle, being followed into the straight by Bonhomme and Polyphemus. The last hurdle was down and once through the gap the favourite held off a challenge from Bonhomme to win by three-quarters of a length. Polyphemus, on the rails, just missed second money by a head. Ten lengths away was Son o’ Aline, and Olympic was next to finish. Fee Simple’s First Win. Of the eight saddled up for the Maiden Handicap Thrift (£488) and Ee Simple (£472) were the only ones in request and the public summed them up fairly well. Pee Simple was smartest on his feet and Jed Kyngzone, Thrift, Vexillun), Double Al ini and Second Thought down the bark stretch. At the T’ee Simple was followed by Thrift ami Second Thought, and the well-backed pair were first into the home stretch, the nearest of the others being Skyrider and Kyngzone. Thrift could not make any impression on Fee Simple in the run to the judge and the Acre gelding won nicely by a length and a-half, with Thrift a similar distance ahead of a trio consisting of Kyngzone, Double Mint and Skyrider, who appeared to finish in that order, though Double Aiint gnt the minor placing. One for New Plymouth. Vivos Cup win was impressive enough to cause backers to entrust her with £475 in the Fraser Al emorial, Hipo (£366) being the only other runner fancier of the quintette. The favourite went out to make the pace as on the opening day, but she was not allowed to get far away. H’po, Capitulation, Bright Day and Twink was the order of the others out of the straight and down the back stretch, while crossing the top Hipo moved up closer the leader. Once they straightened up for the run home Hipo shot to the front and the race was all over, Twink put in a late run to get second place, two lengths behind the winner, while the favourite was third, three lengths away. Bright Day and Capitulation were some five lengths further back. A Hot One Beaten. Backers went fur Mendip hot and strong in the Ngaio Hack Handicap, there being £672 on the top-weight’s chances, with Vigilance (£339) the only other supported. Mendip delayed the start but when the tapes went up the favourite got away well, just behind Vigilance, with Aloutoa Wonder. Helus Bolus and Hymestrason next. At the five furlongs Vigilance crear from Holus Bolus. Aloutoa Wonder and Hymestrason. with Alendip hemmed in on the rails. Crossing the top Vigilance and Holus Bolus were together in front of Alendip and Hymestrason, the favourite still seeking an opening on the fence, but this did not present itself and he had to make his run on the outer up the straight. The task proved too much and he went under to Vigilance by half a length, with Aloutoa Wonder six lengths back, followed by Hymestrason and Holus Bolua,

Dobbin’s Marked Improvement. There was something in the nature of a mild surprise in the open sprint, the Greatford Handicap. Vast Acre (£487), Miss Pat (£433) and Nastori (£323) were most in favour, while Dobbin (£228) was also quietly fancied. Miss Pat and White Kinglet showed out at the barrier rise but Vast Acre soon dashed into the lead, being followed down the back by White Ringlet, Aliss Pat, Dobbin and Bonogne. Crossing the top Vast Acre and Miss Pat were together, just in front of Dobbin and White Ringlet, and they straightened up for the run home in that order. Dobbin ran up to the leaders at the distance and though Vast Acre responded well she was still j a head to the bad at the finish, with Bonogne a length and a-half away, in I third position, just in front of Aliss 1 Pat, White Ringlet and Nastori. A Double-Figure Dividend. ■ Another reverse was- in store for | backers in the Rangitoto Hack HandiI cap. the winner. Aropeta, returning a ' double-figure dividend. Royal Acre ‘ i£477) was much better backed than Gasnapper (£294) and Alaui (£291). I Aropeta led out of the straight from i Airtight. Gasnapper, Borsalene and j Royal Acre after the Cyntoi-Rapturc I gelding had delayed the start considi erably. At the six furlongs Airtight, I Gasnapper, Aropeta, Royal Acre and I Borsalene was the order and this was maintained crossing the top. In the I run io the judge Airtight, Gasnapper, I Royal Acre and Aropeta a ere almost in line and the last-named, getting a i run on the rails, beat the favourite by la neck, with Gasnapper a head away. Airtight. Bissac and Borsalene foJlowj ed in that order. Ruanui Wins Again. The Killeymoon Handicap was an even betting race, Oration (£329), , Partaga (£290), Ruanui (£289) and ! Manly (£263) carrying the money, and I the quartette filled the first four I places. Ruanui was the early pilot, J showing the way to Partaga. Alanly, . Oration and Vesperus, but at the four furlongs Alanly was in the lead from Ruanui, Partaga and Oration, with a big gap to Capitulation. Alanly entered the straight just in front of Ruanui, with Oration and Partaga, together. next, and Ruanui went on with it to hold off Partaga’s challenge and win by half a length. Alanly was in third berth, three lengths away, and Oration and Capitulation were next to finish. Eka Leads All the Way. Helotis (£647) and Eka (£412) were best backed in the Farewell Hack Handicap, and the pair paid the dividends. Eka led out from Helotis, Shining Star, Lethal and Rash, and the Acre filly piloted the field across the top, where she was followed by Helotis, Lethal, Shining Star and Rash. This was the order into the straight and Eka went on to score by half a length from the favourite, with Rash a similar distance away. Lethal, Shining Star and Warflari! • were their nearest attendants.
