MISTAKEN!
MOTOR ASSOCIATION MOVE UPOKONGARO FERRY FEES Recently the Wanganui Automobile Association suggested that a reduction to one shilling for a car on the Upokongaro ferry should be made from the present rate of half-a-crown. The organisation’s suggestion, however, has been declined by the authorities controlling the ferry, apparently on the assumption, as was indicated at last night’s meeting of the Association executive, that it was seeking a reduction merely for motorists’ benefit. It was pointed out, however, that the Association had considered that a reduced charge would bring more cars to the ferry and that the increased patronage would actually improve ferrying business. “We’re not looking for a concession for motorists,” declared a member at last evening’s meeting, “but it is thought that more traffic would be brought to the ferry by lower fees ” The meeting resolved that the Assoelation write the Wanganui County Council, pointing out that, the suggestion was made merely for the purpose above indicated, and that, by bringing more traffic, it would make the uses of the ferry more widely known.
