THE FEUDING MEETING

The w.iather was fine after Monday I eight’s rain and the going was in good ; order, though with the sting out of the . ground the times for the various events I were a trifle on the slow side. The totalisator showed a 25 per cent. increase over the amount handled on the opening day of the 1926 meeting, the figures yesterday beipg £25.777, as compared with £20,736 put through twelve months ago. Keeping in the fashion set at recent meetings there was another sen- • national dividend. Courageous, second to . Broad Acre in the Aorangi Trial Plate, returning a large sum for each of the fourteen tickets that were issued <»n his chances. Had tho Thurnham gelding finished first his supporters would have : received a dividend of three-figure di- : cnensions. Under the supervision of the secretary. Mr K. Goodbehere, the clerical staff had everything working smoothly, ' a factor which makes for the pleasure ; of the racegoer. Mr Goodbehere relinquishes the reins of office after to-day, j and a presentation will be made at an official ceremony this afternoon. Owing to a slight delay earlier in ! the day and the running of two di vis- . ions in the Kowhai Hack Handicap the 1 last race was run nearly half an hour ‘ late. Much inconvenience would be ‘ avoided if clubs could ensure their orogramme being run to the scheduled time. A description of the racing, with de- I tails of the fields, follows: — Mister Gamp's Hurdles. Racing with the Waituna Hardies, in which Pouri was entrusted with £666, which was £146 more than was carried by Troilus, and the eventual winner, Mister Gamp, had £369 against his number. The favourite led over the first fence from Star Area. Maidos, Troilus, Sir Fanciful and Mister Gamp, and at the stands still hold the lead, being followed by Troilus, Mister Gamp, Maidos, Star Area, Sir Fanciful, Braeman. The order was the same entering the back, but at the four fur longs Mister Gamp made a forward move and landed over the hist obstacle Ba terms with Pouri, Troilus and Star Area being the nearest of the others. In the run home Mister Gamp had it on Poun and just got there by a head, with Star Area three lengths away, ♦oilowed by Bevel, Troilus. Maidos and Braeman. One for the Favourite. There was a good pool in the AoranE l Trial Plate. Broad Acre (£567), Plane (£422;, Maui (£368 , and Whis- . ogne (£273) being best backed. The result proved that the pq£>lic had sorted them out fairly well as, after allowing Plane to lead for a couple of lar lungs Broad Acre went to the front I crossing the top and led into the I tetraight from Yiaison, Plane. Aurora j Borealis, W hisogne, Maui, Irish Lad, j Loyal Picture and Courageous, The last-named, who Lad gow away badly, did best in the concluding stages to get up within two lengths of the favourite, with Plane a neck away in third place. Next to finish were Liaison, Maui, Loyal Picture, Torquil, Irish Lad, Whisogne. Atone, and Historic. Limosa was tailed off early and ran in the rear all the way. Courageous was neglected on the machine and paid upwards of half a century for second. Joy Bird Wins the Cup. Howley ’s engagement in the Feilding j Cup was declined, and when backers 1 got to work they installed Paitonu fa- ■ v ®uritc. the 1 aranaki gelding carrying ; (£7B7) and Wander- ' Inst (£5o0) being the only others in j the market. Wanderlust and Euphon- I mm were first out from a good start, but going part the stands Wanderlust, Joy Bird, Euphonium, Tresham and Novar was the order. Joy Bird took the lead at the five furlongs, and the favourite moved up into third place. Novar being the only one behind Euphonium. Paitonu went to the front the bend, but when thev entered ■wie home stretch Joy Bird was in the Kxu and Paitonu was well beaten. Going away at the finish Joy Bird was three lengths in front when the judge was reached, Wanderlust and Euphonium having a great tussle to share second money, with Novar in fourth berth. Tresham fifth and Paitonu ingloriously last. Royal Acre’s First Division. The Kowhai Hack was run in two iivisions. Betting took a wide range. Loyal Acre (£498), Fee Simple (£462), Vigilance (£398) and Some Lad (£266) being preferred in that order. In the first division Hypnotic was the early leader from Fee Simple, Tanagra and Mandarine, with Royal Acre in fifth place at the five furlong peg. When they turned for home the favourite worked his way up to third place, being well up in the fighting line, and with Mandarine and Tone joining in

KIOSK WINS THE STAKES Good Dividends the Outstanding Feature of Opening Day JOY BIRD SURPRISES IN CUP By “KESTREL The opening day. yesterday, of the Feilding Jockey Club’s spring meeting was featured by good racing and some exceptionally good dividends were paid by candidates that have been running into io rm Lately. The principal event, the Feilding Cup. was annexed by Joy Bird, the favourite, Paitonu, giving an inglorious display. Wan ganui furnished the winners of three races, these being the Feild--ug Stakes (Kiosk), the Flying Handicap (Covent Garden), and the Kiwitea High-weight (Ruanui).

i a good finish resulted, Broad Acre be- | ing a long neck to the good, with Tone I half a length away. Lin Arlington was fourth, followed by Hypnotic, Fee I Simple and Volplane. Vigilance Finishes Well. Vigilance was first out in the second division, followed by Powhiri. Hymgreat, Ganymede, Some Lad and ; Kawhakina. At the back Vigilance | and Powhiri were clear of Night Witch and Hymgreat, but at the turn Vigilance had been supplanted by Powhiri and Night Witch, only to come again and gain the verdict by half a length, with Powhiri two and a half lengths away. Kawhakina, Ganymede, :So vena, Night Witch and Bent were next to finish. Easy for Kiosk. Nine were saddled up for the Feilding Stakes, and in a good betting race ‘Limited (£616), Kiosk (£556) and Silvermine (£391) were favoured in that order. From a good start Lysander and Kiosk were first to move, but : after they had travelled a little over ia furlong Limited was in front of Silvermine, and Royal Duke, Kiosk, Lysander, Chit and Lady Cjßrendish fol-

i lowed in that order. Limited turned ' for home ahead of Silvermine, Royal | Duke, Kiosk, Lysander and Chit, but in the run up the straight Kiosk was , always a winner and had a length to spare from Silvermine, with Lady Cavendish half a length away in third berth. Lysander was fourth and Limj ited, Lieinius, Royal Duke, Shirley and i Chit were next in that order. Covent Garden Gets Up. Co vent Garden was the elect of i backers in the Flying Handicap, carry- ! ing £734, while Arrow Lad was enjtrusted with £597 and Royal Damon I £430. The favourite was quickest to ' move out and was followed by Deluge, : i Mireusonta, Bright Knight, Royal j . ijand, Say.hee and Royal Damon. At , 1 the half Covent Garden still held the t lead from Royal Damon and Mireusonlu, but at the turn for home he was >nowed in behind Royal Damon, Mireusonta and Epistle. Looking to be in a hopeless position when they strightenrd up, Barry sent the favourite through on the rails to snatch victory by a neck from Sarchee, with Epistle a neck away. Mireusonta was close up in fourth place, and the next to finish I were Royal Damon, Royal Land, The ! 1 Lamb, Arrow Lad. Bonogne and Deli uge. Vast Acre at a Great Price. , Another large field contested the ' Fitzroy Hack, and Expense was sorted out tu win, carrying £6Ol, against £515 ! on Lady Limond and £454 on Vast | Acre, the last-named being at a great : price owing to drawing the outside position. It was a case of first out and first home with the top-weight as, taking the lead from the barrier rise, Vast ■ Acre was never headed. Panther, Royal Time, Lady Cynthia and Lucky Days were her nearest attendants over rhe initial stages, with, the favourite well back, but at the entrance to the ' straight Expense was just behind Vast ! Acre and Royal Time, the nearest of ’ the others being The Raider, who had ' been badly left. Nothing had a look in on the way to the judge as far as catching the leader was concerned, and | when the post was passed the Acre ■ mare was three lengths in front of Expense, with Lucky Days in third place, a neck away. Then came Miss Mercja, close up, and Lady Limond, Royal Time, Desert Lad, Borsalene, i The Raider, Panther and Spearmiss. Ruanui Wins for Fordell. The concluding event saw Kilmiss (£774) best backed in the largest pool of the day. Orazone (£661/, Ortatrix i (£581) and Vivo (£453) being pre--1 ferred of the others. The field got . away to a good start after the favourj ite had broken the tapes and gone a ; hundred yards on her way. Ruanui took the lead going out of the straight,

being followed by Gleninuis, Queen Choice, Vivo, Kilmiss and Oratrix. Save that Kilmiss had run into third place down the back the order was little changed until they came into the straight again. Ruanui held his own over the concluding stages to win comfortably by a length from the fast finishing Kilmiss, with Vivo three lengths away. followed by Oratrix, Orazone, Queen’s Choice, Lady Anstruther. Gleninnis, Superb King and Bright Day. The winner paid a great price for a Fordell-trained horse,, there being only £199 tickets on him on the machine. FULL DETAILS. WAITUNA HURDI.ES.
