MOTOR GYMKANA. [ Special “ Chronicle ” Service ] Under the auspices of the Manawatu Motor Cycle Club, some 200 members and friends visited Bulls on Sunday for combined picnic and sports. During the afternoon the number ■ attending was considerably augmented by a number of townspeople who witnessed a fine display in novel motor-cycle competitions. The oiub propose to visit the Domain every month during the summer months. The local people were also treated to witnessing a football match on motor cycles which proved very thrilling and at times rather humourous. The following are tho results of the finals of the various competitions:— Obstacle Race. —A. Tolley 1, Diamond 2, Hunger 3. Won by inches. Thrcad-the-Neede race.—H. Ellery (scr.) and Wilson (8), and resulted in an easy win for the latter by .124 to 50. E. Wilson will now meet P. Hollis in the final next Saturday evening. In Mr Bevan’s saloon T. Ellery (9) beat P. Rewiti (14) 19—34, 66—26, 61—26. The following is the draw for the second round: H. Bartlett (16) v. F. Dunham (19), G. Archer (12) v. L. Healey (28), T .Taylor (20) v. A. GIRL’S HARDSHIP Another of the heart appealing dramas, which Colleen Moore knows so well how to deliver, is the promise of First National in her latest screen vehicle, “It Must Be Love,” which will be shown at the Bulls Town Hall on Saturday evening. In this human story of a New York girl’s struggle against the mediocrity and misunderstanding of her parents, Colleen Moore has given to the screen a dramatic bit of life familiar to everyone who has been brought up in th midst of the crowded city. Because she wanted to have a nice home, where she could bring her friends without a feeling of inferiority, this girl, as portrayed by Miss Moore had to sacrifice the love of her father and almost broke her mother’s heart. TOWN BOARD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Bulls Town Board was held on Monday evening. There were present: Messrs H. McManaway (chairman), V. Edhouse, J. Walker, T. Ellery, C. H. Broughton, W. E. Robbie, and F. A. Holland The foreman’s report detailed work done in cleaning out water-tables in Upper High Street; grading of all main roads, and work done in helping with the laying-down of the experimental section of Lay-kold in Lower High St. The Footpaths Committee presented their report on the Lay-kold experiment, the matter being discussed in committee. Applications for the transfer of properties in the Town Board’s area were approved as follows: —Estate F. B. Green to Mrs ‘Sarah Carter; Mrs M. Smith to Mr W. Stevens; Mr W. J. McCabe to Mrs Elizabeth Ellery; Thomas Bowe to Miss M. Green and others. The secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, wrote notifying the Board that the next annual conference would be held in Nelson, commencing on the second Wednesday in March, 1928. —Received. The Chief Postmaster, Palmerston North, wrote stating that the P. and T. Department had approved of the proposal to erect an electric fire siren on

the clock tower of the Bulls post office. —Received.

The Rangitikei County Council wrote re streets in Moana Roa seaside townshin.—Left in the chairman’s hands to complete arrangements. Air Broughton reported on the work done in cleaning up Clifton cemetery, but in reply to Mr Walker, admitted that he had seen a number of rabbits there. Mr Walker stated that the Government Rabbit Inspector had recommended the use of puison.—Agreed to. Air Holland referred to “the unusual quiet” of last November 5, and speaking as a property owner, said that in his opinion the local constable was to be commended for preventing the indiscriminate letting-off of crackers. The question 'of motorists speeding through the township was referred to by several members, and in the interests of public safety it was agreed that something would have to be done to bring the offenders to book. Noisy motor-cycles also came in for comment, and it was’decided to appoint an “outside” inspector to control the traffic. Credit balances were shown as follows: District Fund £33 3s 7d; library, £37 19s; cemetery £35 18s Bd. Receipts for the month were: Town Board £56 Ils 6d; library £4 Ils. Accounts passed for payment: District Fund £139 9s, library £4 0s Bd. Air Edhouse reported that after paying expenses of the opening function of the Town Hall supper room there was a credit balance of approximately £3. —It was agreed to donate this amount to the Bulls School Funds. Domain Board. The members then sat as a Domain Board. The chairman reported that the balance sheet for the last two years had been returned by the auditor, without a tag. The Domain Board account showed a credit balance of £22 19s 7d. Receipts for the month £4 3s 6d. Account passed for payment: £1 0s 6d. Considerable discussion took place regarding the holding of motor sports on the Domain on Sunday. The majority of members disclaimed knowledge of the sports, but Messrs Broughton and Walker stated that they had attended part of the time, and the police were also present. Atr Broughton said that permission had been given to the

Afanawatu Motor Cycle Club to use the camping site for a picnic. Various competitions had been conducted, but he saw nothing to which exception could be taken. They were a number of young people, he said, who enjoyed the day in picnicking and games. Air Walker was on the Domain iate in the afternoon, and saw nothing wrong. The chairman, who .confessed that ho was not a kill-sport, inquired if the club had permission to use the ground. Air Holland said that permission had been granted for the previous Sunday, which turned out wet. He had been approached by members of the club who inquired if the permit could be utilised on the following Sunday, and he had given permission. Air Robbie said that he had not inspected the ground and could not say if any damage had been done the sports track. Air Broughton stated that Mr Dawber, at his request, had asked members of the club to keep off the track, which they had done. It was reported that the Motor Club would like to use the ground again in about a month, and no exception was taken, the discussion then lapsing.
