CHRISTMAS NUMBERS
TWO EXCELLENT ISSUES. Among New Zealand weeklies, the Free Lance has always occupied a prominent position, and one naturally expects its Christmas number to be in keeping with its reputation. The expectation is certainly not disappointed so far as the Christmas number for 1927 is concerned. In keeping with the season’s spirit, the illustrations, all beautifully produced, include a large number of sporting and holiday pictures, as well as many of the Dominion’s most attractive resorts. The pictorial, too, is well blended with the literary, and there are several capital stories and articles to give the necessary variety. The Free Lance is to be complimented upon its excellent Christmas annual for 1927. The Commercial Traveller, the official organ of the New Zealand Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association, puts out an exceptionally bright and attractive Christmas number this year. The beautifully reproduced coloured picture of the “Drop Scene,” the famous scenic spot on the Wanganui River, which adorns the cover, gives a foretaste of the excellent contents of the issue. Here again the holiday spirit is predominant, the , illustrations having largely to do with sport and holiday-making and it should be said that quite a number of the views deal with new subjects in place of those which have been made verj familiar by frequent reproduction in various journals. A number of wellwritten stories give variety to the issue, which is a credit to its sponsors.
