JUNIOR CRICKET

SATURDAY’S MATCHES Younger Batsmen and Bowlers in the Limelight. SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES From the lower grades of the cricketers of to-day are recruited the senior players of to-morrow and therefore it behoves those in authority in the cricket world to lend encouragement to the junior players. On Saturday some fine performances were seen on Peat Park and other grounds on which the junior grades staged their matches, some of the displays being even more interesting than those put on by the seniors, which were rather drab by comparison. As the season progresses it may be found that the improvement in the junior grades will be maintained and a number of promotions to senior rank may be recorded before thje season closes. The results of some of the matches are given below:— WANGANUI AND ARAMOHO After a very keenly contested game Wanganui defeated Aramoho by 48 runs on the first innings and secured a two-point win. Their win places them second on the championship ladder. Wanganui won the toss and elected to bat. Thrush being caught off the first ball. Weller, the incoming batsman and Earles put up a very stubborn defence the team’s victory being in no small measure due to their patient batting. Earles survived a very confident appeal for caught at the wicket. With four wickets down for 59 runs, Eeles and Thomas became associated and runs came freely until the partnership was broken at 98 by Baldwin bowling Thomas who made 34.

Eeles continued to bat freely until dismissed by a catch after making top score of 40. R. Francis compiled his 22 in very quick time but the innings closed Tor 164. " Bowling for Aramnho Brown was the most successful, securing three wickets for 9 runs in three overs. Oliver took one for 9 and bowled very well. This lad if taken in hand should make an excellent bowler. Aramoho, set with the task of making 165 runs, commenced their innings at 4.45 p-m. With two wickets down for six runs their prospects were not bright but fine defensive cricket by Brown (21) and W. Pepper (24) put them in a fairly good position. Each batsman put up a stubborn defence in an effort to save the game by making it a draw but the last wicket fell for 116 with 20 minutes’ play still left. Bowling for Wanganui Thomas secured the excellent average of seven wickets for 59. Details of the scores are as follows: — Wanganui Thrush, c W. COLLEGIATE A AND ST. ANDREW’S The match between Collegiate A and St. Andrew’s served to show how badly a team can “crash” when the bowling and? fielding are in keen hands. In reply to Collegiate’s total of 146 St. Andrew’s could only compile 48, allowing their opponents to notch a twopoint victory. For Collegiate Lambert (24), Pomare (19), Kirkcaldie (19), Marshall (17) and Irving (10) all reached double figures, while the other five players contributed 28 To the total. Upton (13) and Latham (12) notched more than half the St. Andrew’s total and three of the team failed to score at all.
