A NEW SYSTEM CROSSING AT STATIONS. I Special “ Chronicle ” Service. J WELLINGTON, Nov. 9. At the end of the month, all will be ready for the commencement . of the [policy of train control which the Raili way Department is trying out between • Christchurch and Oamaru- Preparations I for the experiment between Wellington i and Marton will be concluded by Christmas. The necessary work now in hand is the connecting of stations w r ith a selective telephone which will enable them to report train movements to the controlling officer. These telephones are in addition to the “station to station” lines used in reporting ordinary train movements, and to the ordinary connections with central telephone exchanges which are held by stations near the cities and large towns. The principal benefit from tram control is the elimination of risks af traffic blocks. At present the crossing of trains are arranged between stations to suit their own convenience, but often, especially in the case of goods train's, the crossing is not to tho benefit of the whole sector. Under the new system, crossings will be directed from the central office.

Applications from tho railway service for the post of train control officers in the North and South Islands close on Saturday next. It is expected that two officers who recently visited Australia to study the system in operation will be appointed
