IMPORTANT VICTORY
NATIONALISTS’ CLAIM Severe Defeat of Northern Army Reported FIGHTING IN SHANTUNG. (By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright.) Received Nov. 9, 11 p.m. (Sun Cable) SHANGHAI, Nov. 9. The Nationalists claim a major victory in Liu-ho and Honan, following five days’ fighting. General Feng-yu Hsiang reports the capture of four armoured trains with 20,000 prisoners, 45 cannon, 100 trench mortars and a similar number of machine guns. He also states that he has reached within three miles of Hsuchow-fu, an important strategic railway centre, and says he will sweep Shantung clear of the Northerners within a fortnight. The report is of purely Nationalist origin, but in the absence of Northern denials it is probably true.
