NEW ZEALAND OAKS

WILD PIGEON SURPRISES Limerick Has Decisive Win Over Stayers in Canterbury Cup THIRD DAY AT RICCARTON The third day of the C.J.C. spring meeting at Riccarton yesterday was “ladies’ day,’’ the New Zealand Oaks coming up for decision. Wild Pigeon surprised by beating favouirte, Doree, in the field of four that contested the fillies’’ classic. A trio of stayers contested the Canterbury Cup, and Limerick had no difficulty in maintaining his supremacy. In the remaining events there were a few surprises that were rather disconcerting to backers.

DAY OF SURPRISES

GREAT CHARTER’S DASH. SUDDEN STORM. SISTER TO CHILDSPLAY. [ Special ** Chronicle r Service. 1 CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 9. The third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting was held at Biccarton to-day. Rain overnight had softened the course, but the going was still very good, although soft. The weather was fine an! the attendance not so large as on the preceding days. The totalisator handled £41,034. against £43,038 last year, a decrease of £2004. Red Fuchsia Makes Amends. Projector was scratched for the Hurdles, leaving a field of six. Kaikahu was made a warm favourite, with Red Fuchsia and Koauau well supported. Aberfeldy was the early leader but jumped badly and Beauty Light carried on from Red Fuchsia and Kaikahu. The last-named raced to the front six furlongs from home and led into the straight but Red Fuchsia came with a good run and won very comfortably. Aberfeldy, who was third, gave his best display at the meeting but the jumping left a lot to be desired. Koauau showed no form. A Paper Money Juvenile. Silver Paper was favourite in the Spring Nurserv Handicap and he duly won after a great battle over the last bit with Silver Rule, who finished on well. The winner is a Paper Money from that good mare Silver Peak and looks likely to develop into a Still more useful sort. Silver Rule is a food sort and on the improve. Mr G. D. Greenwood’s crack, Goblin Market, was in the picture at the distance but failed to run on and is evidently not ready. The Christmas meetings may find him doing better. Sir Roy in Great Finfiih. The Otaio Plate saw a good field go to the post and a great race result. Royal Game, Ark Royal. Cornstalk. Battlement, Vesperu-. Peho and Vaward was the order in the early part and there was little alteration when the straight was reached. At the distance a great race developed and Sir Roy, finding an opening on the rails, eame through to win very decisively from Battlement, who ran on? of his best races to date and will yet win a good race. Toma, badly placed in the early stages, came with a rattle at the finish, gaining third place. Royal Game failed badly over the last part and evidently has had enough racing for the present. Oratrix. badly placed in the early stages, was putting in great work at the finish. The Canterbury Clip Trio. The scratching of Count Cavour left Footfall, Star Stranger, and Limerick to go to the post for the Canterbury Cup. The last-named was made a very hot favourite. The pace was easy over the first part, and Limerick went to the front at the mile and a-quarter post and, setting great pace, led Into the straight to win comfortably by five lengths. Footfall, going strongly in the last part, beat Star Stranger by six lengths. Limerick is plainly of too good a class for the other pair and the big weight-for age events look easy for him. Great Charter All the Way. Grand Knight was made favourite for the Jockey Club Handicap, with Reremoana and Beacon Light best backed. From a good start Set Sail was momentarily in front but then Great Charter took the lead and set merry pace from Civility, Reremoana and Grand Knight. This was the order into the straight but Great Charter, full of running, held his own to stall off a strong challenge by Grand Knight and win by two lengths. Grand Knight ran a good race and should be improved by the gallop. Set Sail went

well but was not good enough. Civility was fourth and Centrepiece was running on at the finish. Mandane also went well and should be prominent in the Fendalton Handicap on Saturday. Wild Pigeon Downs Doree. ; The Oaks drew but four starters and ias two unruly horses in Wild Pigeon ■ and Scrambler were engaged they were , despatched to a walking-up start. Scrambler and Vigilance made the running until six furlongs from home, when Doree went to the front and looked all over a winner. Wild Pigeon, who was last all the way, came with a great run in the straight, galloping in grand style, and won decisively. Wild Pigeon started twice previously at the me<‘ting, both times losing her jockey at the start. She is a fine long-strid-ing filly and with luck will win again. Scrambler, who was a hundred yards away, last, is not much good over a distance. Backers Astray Again. The Ashley Handicap found backers astray for they supported Avro, Wanderlust, Talisker and Hoylake in that order, but Avro was the only one to get in a place. Avro, Grand National, Talisker and Wild Work were prominent throughout, while Money Peer was well back all through and at one stage

was last. He put in a great run over the last half-mile on the outside of the field and, getting in front a hundred yards from home, won in very im-’ pressive style. It was a rather remarkable performance on the part of the winner, who finished as game as a pebble. Grand National was always with the leaders and struggled on gamely to defeat Avro for second money. Kindle and Talisker were next to finish. Arikiwai ran well for a time but his form was disappointing. Hoylako was in the firing line at the distance, where he stumbled and almost came down. Sudden Storm Surprises. The Avon Handicap, a good betting race, saw a boil over in Sir George Clifford’s Sudden Storm, a full sister to Childsplay, win after putting in a great run over the last three furlongs. Paleta, Father O’Flynn and Gold Brick made the early running and at the distance a great race resulted. Sudden Storm found an opening at the false rail and. galloping in resolute fashion, won decisively by a length, with Lausanne a neck in front of Gold Brick. Rascal, Dismantle and. Monaghan were next to finish. FULL DETAILS. PORT COOPER HURDLES. (Of 250 sovs. 1-i miles.) 2 —Red Fuchsia, 9.8, A. McDonald .. 1 I—Kaikahu, 10.10, J. WARNING TO OTHERS

THE ROWLEY SENSATION WAIRARAPA OWNER HELD BLAMELESS Much pleasure has been expressed by sportsmen at the action of the Canterbury District Committee in lifting the sentence of two years’ disqualification imposed on Mr. A. McDonald, the wellknown Wairarapa sportsman, in connection with, the running of Rowley in the Riccarton Handicap at the C.J.C. meeting on Saturday last. That the suspicions of the stewards with regard to the actions of the trainer and jockey were well-grounded is made apparent by the terms in which the District Committee has framed its finding, but as the owner was not implicated, the action of lifting the bar from him appears to have been inevitable. Sufficient warning appears to have been given to all and sundry in the racing game that the authorities intend to put down crooked running with a firm hand. Mr. A. McDonald is one of the Dominion’s best-known owners, and he* is one of the “big men” of the turf in this country. He has raced a number of good horses of late years, among those carrying the purple jacket and light blue cap being Affectation, Killo era, Soliform, Municipal, Rose Wreath, Rowley (whom he had purchased for IjOOOgns. from a Gisborne sportsman;, Royal Ceres and the two-year-old High Disdain. The Wairarapa sportsman is also a breeder, and some of the horses meutioned above were bred by him R. S. Bagby a few seasons ago was a most successful jockey, until increasing weight gave him few opportunities of following this pursuit. He then turned his attention to training, and when J. T. Jamieson went to Auckland, Bagby took over Mr. McDonald’s horses from him. When the weights suited, the trainer would himself ride his patron’s horses in their races. Bagby also trained Vesperus, who raced in other colours. The disqualified trainer has ridden the winners of many important races,

notably the G.N. Champagne Stakes, Avondale Guineas, C.J.C. Handicap, Metropolitan Handicap, Great Autumn Handicap and Winter Cup, H.B. Stakes, Awapuni Gold Cup, Napier Cup, North Otago Cup, Rangitikei Cup, Wairarapa Cup. Wanganui Guineas, Wellesley Stakes, N.Z. St. Leger and Wellington Stakes. He also.did a little racing over obstacles and was on Kohu when that horse won the Great Northern Hurdles. R. S. Bagby is an elder brother of tha well-known Auckland horseman. The apprentice rider, A. R. Parker, rider of Rowley, who has been suspended for a year, is apprenticed io Trainer Bagby.

YEARLINGS CHANGE HANDS (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 9. Mr A. B. Williams has purchased from Mr H. M. Reeves, a Canterbury breeder, the yearling colt by Paladin, out of Hornbeam. The price paid was 500 guineas. At the yearling sales held at the show grounds yesterday, six from Eld-ersli-e stud sold at prices ranging from 45 guineas to 200 guineas. The latter price was paid for a Sarehedon filly, and the purchaser was Captain B. H. Edkins, of Wellington. Eleven other racehorses were offered, but only two iXs sold.
