U 3. STATE ELECTIONS KU KLUX KLAN AND CHURCHES TAKE PART Received Nov. 8. 8.40 p.m. (A. & N.Z.) NEW YORK. Nov. 7. Elections take place in various States to-morrow, the chief interest centring in the eastern section, where the issues, though local, have been bitterly contested. New York State will elect 51 mayors and the State Assembly. Governor .Smith and Mr Roosevelt, son of the former President, have enlivened the campaign by a personal quarrel, the latter charging the Governor with countenancing gambling in State capIt is believed that if a Democratic Assembly is returned, it will be indicative of how the State will vote in the Presidential contest in 1928. A sharp contest is raging in Kentucky over the Governor.-mp. The Democratic nominee opposes horse-racing and organised Labour is therefore supporting Mr Sampson, the Republican nominee. New Jersey elects 60 members of the Assembly and seven Senators, and it is believed to be a foregone conclusion that the State Legislature. which is now preponderantly Republican, will remain so. Detroit is torn by a vituperative campaign for the city mayoralty, Mayor Smith, who seeks re-election, favouring the non-enforcement of prohibition, while his opponent. Mr Lodge, has declined to announce his policy. The Ku KJux Klan and the churches are taking an active p»rr in the Philadelphia municipal contest, which is between the Republican candidate for the Mayoralty. Mr Mackey, and the Independent Citizen’s candidate, Mr Moore. The issue is the honesty of party organisations.
