RIDGWAY STREET
THE EXTENSION QUESTION A FURTHER MOVE In view of the abandonment of th® clause prepared by the City Solicitor (Mr W. J. Treadwell) to authorise the City Council to expend moneys raised under the Relief of Unemployment Loan of £.10,900 for the construction of a street through the old cemetery in the extension of Ridgway Street, Or. C. H. Burnett moved the following motion at last evening’s meeting of the Councils (a) That the Council take steps to raise a loan sufficient to build up Ridgway extension bridge and construct the extended road along the route known as the alternative route; (b) that the matter of the estimates for the loan be referred to the engineer and the Finance Committee to report. Cr. Burnett asked the City Solicitor to give a further opinion on the matter, and Mr Treadwell replied, inter alia, as folows:—“In my opinion the moneys authorised under the loan could not bo utilised in connection with the original route, of which the bridge forms a part, unless a Special Order were mado to make the street, as originally proposed, through the cemetery. It would, of i course, be merely a form passing a special order to make a road, as no road can bo taken through a cemetery. If the Council chose to pass a special order then it seems that moneys available under the original loan of £10,900 could be utilised towards the erection of a bridge. Whether the Council would adopt this somewhat nnnsuat procedure is for the council to say. The proper course, in my opinion, is to raise a loan by special order in the terms of the Relief of Unemployment Act and complete the work.” There was considerable discussion on the point, and it was decided that Cr. Burnett should bring his motion forward at a special meeting of th® Council.
