CHRISTMAS TRAMS
DOWN THE AVENUE MOTOR TRAFFIC KEPT TO ST. HILL STREET For the past two years it has been the practice of the Corporation Tramways to run trams on Christmas Eve only as far into the city as Guyton Street.
Th© City Council last evening received a deputation from shopkeepers in the lower and middle portions of Victoria Avenue, headed by Mr A. E. Rankin, which asked that trains be run down the Ajvenue to Taupo Quay as usual. It was pointed out that in Christchurch the trams were run over all routes and that the usual timetable was accelerated.
“We have had a pretty bad spin during the last twelve months,’’ said Mr Rankin; “our rates are heavier, and we are looking forward to recouping something during this season.” It was decided to grant the request that the trams run down the Avenue, and that motor buses and other vehicular traffic be diverted down St. Hill Street on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
