SUMMER CAMP FOR BOYS A CHRISTMAS BOX FOPv YOUR BOY Just about this time of the year, lots of parents are wondering what they can give to their sons as a Christmas present. The Y.M.C.A. would like to make a suggestion. The usual summer camp of the boys’ department of the Y.M.CA.. will be held at Kai Iwi Beach from December 27 for three weeks. Why not make him a present of at least a fortnight with the rest of the boys? Out in the fresh air away from the noise and bustle, he will be taking part in a programme of activities which will help him, we are sure, to be litter to face the year of life ahead of him. The whole of the camp programme is supervised and the cooking arrangements are in the best hands possible. If you are interested, the Y.M.C.A. will be glad to answer any inquiries. FIRST INTERNATIONAL Y.M.C.A ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS The First International Y.M.C.A. athletic championships held at Copenhagen in the middle of July, proved such an extraordinary success that it is expected to repeat the games in future at regular intervals. Those who attended have returned with glowing accounts of the hospitality of the Danes. If they could have their wish, the games would be held in Denmark each time. From the King to the youngest member of the boys’ department, all Denmark seemed to be captivated by the idea of 500 athletes from seventeen different countries, all of them members of the same world-wide organisation, competing in events in which not victory but good sportsmanship and the friendly matching of skill and prowess were the notes emphasised. There were five large sections of the games: track and field, swimming, basket ball, volley ball, and football. Sweden won the John B. Mott trophy in the track and field events, and proved to be the only double winner by taking the silver cup for swimming. Latvia gained the volley ball prize; a team from the Detroit (U.S.A) Y.M.C.A. won the basket ball championship; and Denmark appropriately carried off honours in football. The games were well attended. Among the notables present at several of the events were H.M. the King, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, the president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, and others. A unique feature of these international athletic championships wa s the fact that each day was begun with a short devotional exercise conducted in the Copenhagen Central Y.M.C.A. by Dr. Karl Fries, former general secretary of the World’s Alliance.
