KINDLY ACTS

FANCIER’S THANKS EARNED ASSISTANCE GIVEN TO HOMING v PIGEON. WELLINGTON, Nov 5. Homing pigeon clubs lose many birds during the flying season, some through stress of weather and often, unfortunately, through the action of shooting parties or persons out with a gun. If everybody showed the same attention to a tired, weather-beaten bird as in a case that has just been brought under notice, pigeon fanciers would have little to complain about. Mr Q. Barnard, of Lower Hutt, a membef of the Petonc Club, sent a bird, with others, to Frankton and the race was flown during the recent rough weather. The bird was absent so long that it was given up for lost, but it arrived a few days ago with the following message tied to its leg:—“This bird was hurt, and was cared for by Miss Ellen Connor, Waiteika Road, Opunake.” On the other side of the piece of paper was the following:— “This bird landed at our place just about dark on Wednesday night, hungry and tired. It has been blowing a gale ever since so I kept it till the weather cleared. As you will see by the other side of the note, it was found hurt; liberated here 10.30 Sunday.— C. W. Curtis, Levin.” This knidly act on the part of Miss Connor and Mr Curtis is gratefully acknowledged by Mr Barnard, and it should make pleasurable reading to all bird lovers.
