FLOWER SHOW

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY FINE DISPLAY OF BOSES The Wanganui Horticultural Society ’s summer show was held in the Drill Hall yesterday and received good patronage both afternoon and evening, in spite of the inclement weather. In officially opening the show, the president, Air W. J. Treadwell, considered that the exhibition Lad proved to be quite successful axtnough conditions had been against the committee. Th*» show was an excellent one in all respects except one. The roses were good, th© cut flowers were excellent, and the decorative classes were first class, but the same could not be sai* with regard to the fruit and vegetables. In this latter section the entries were very poor, and while there were some good exhibits, they were not numerically strong. The committee were considering the advisability of deleting the fruit and vegetable classes from the schedule in all except the autumn shows. The committee wished to remind exhibitors that next year would be the Association’s diamond jubilee year, and a special effort was going to be made, he said. They hoped to hold a two-day show in the new museum sometime in April, and the assistance of all subscribers was wanted.

Mr Treadwell pointed out that the entries for the present show were very satisfactory. Exhibitors numbered 81 as against 65 last year, and entries totalled 384 compared with 289. The children’s section was very strong, there being 29 entries in four classes.

Air Treadwell also announced that the rose bowl which ee nad presented in 1914 when he had become president, would this year be won outright. That bowl would be won either -by Mr Rhodes or Air Porteous. In conclusion .Mr Treadwell thanked the secretary (Mr V. B. Willis) and the lion, treasurer (Mr H. J. Duigan) for their good work. ’The society was making progress but what was wanted was a building of their own. He thought they should make an effort to secure the old museum building.
