RELIC OF 1870 SURRENDER OF STRASBOURG. PARIS, Oct. 15. An historic incident of the war of 1870 has been recalled* by the presentation to the city of Strasbourg of the white flag which was hoisted over the Cathedral on Sept. 25, 1870, in token uf the surrender of the city to the in l This flag was subsequently taken away by a French officer, Captain Jean Wolff, who concealed it by wrapt ping it round his body and carefully I preserver! it until his death. He bequeathed it to the town of Argentan. with instructions that it should be publicly burned on the day when Strasbourg once more became French territory. But the municipality deckled That the cause of patriotism would be better served by its preservation as a relic. It was Therefore presented to the .Mayor uf Strasbourg in the presence of a large gathering of ex-sol-diers. patriotic societies, and veterans of the Franco-Prussian War. who escorted it in triumph to the museum.
