LAST GREAT EMPIRE
BRITAIN’S LONE HAND Continued Peace Essentia! for Survival CRITICAL DAYS (By Telegraph—Per Press Assrn. —Copyright.) Received Oct. 27, 11 p.m. (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, Oct. 27. Professor Gilbert Murray is reported by the Daily Telegraph as declaring, in a speech at Oxford, that the British Empire is in a critical condition. There were four great empires before the war, he said, and it was dangerous then for one to do anything without consulting the others. Three of these empires were shattered to pieces, and only the British Empire was left, and it was in a precarious conditit.fi. The age of great Powers had ended therefore, and the time was past when Britain could do practically what she liked. The Empire before the war was increasing by general impetus; now it was in retreat. In spite of the difficulties, however, it was on the upgrade as a nation, but must play for caution and avoid war, revolution or any shock to credit. The dislike felt against the four great empires before the war was now concentrated against Britain.
